Sakuma Akira, born in Kawasaki, Kanagawa, is a former Japanese actor. His real name is Sakuma Mitsuo (佐久間三雄), and he was affiliated with Art Mirai-ha. He graduated from Josai University.

Sakuma grew up near several movie theaters, which sparked his early interest in films. He made his debut in 1962 as a child actor in the Nikkatsu film Uta-U Abarenbo while still in grade school. Initially, he appeared in films and television dramas under his real name.

In the early 1970s, Sakuma began to pursue acting more seriously and adopted the stage name Sakuma Akira around 1973. In an interview that year, he expressed his ambition to eventually become a film director.
