Ichikawa Chusha made his stage debut in October 1913 at the Kabuki-za (歌舞伎座), performing under the name Ichikawa Matsuo (市川松尾) in the play "Zohiki" (象引). Despite his early debut, he pursued formal education and graduated from Keika Commercial School (京華商業学校). In March 1916, he was adopted by the seventh-generation Ichikawa Yaohachi (七代目市川八百蔵).
In 1953, at the Kabuki-za, he took on the stage name of the eighth-generation Ichikawa Chusha during the play "Taikoki" (太閤記). He later joined the film company Toho (東宝) in 1961.
His final performance was in June 1971 at the National Theatre in "Tsuyu Kosode Mukashi Hachijo" (梅雨小袖昔八丈). He passed away shortly after this performance on June 20, 1971, at the age of 74.
