Lu Yu Lai was born in Neijiang City, Sichuan Province. He graduated from the Drama Department and the Directing Department of Beijing Film Academy. He is an actor and a director from Mainland China.

In 2005, he debuted with the film Peacock when he was still a student. With his role in Peacock, he nominated for the Best Supporting Actor award in the Chinese Media Film Awards.
In 2009, he won the Best Actor Award at the Madrid Film Festival with his role in the movie Soundless Wind Chimes.
In 2010, he won the best TV film actor award at the 17th Beijing University Student Film Festival with the movie Summer Without Cicadas.
In 2017, Lu Yu Lai directed the artistic film Taoyuan. The film won the Audience Voting Honor, Chinese New Generation Most Popular Film award at the 2nd Pingyao International Film Festival in 2018.
