He made his debut in April 1998 when he released his first full album, "Whispers of Hope", at the age of 12. Then, in 2003, he decided to become a pop-opera singer and became the youngest Korean male vocalist to have a solo concert at Carnegie Hall in New York. He is regarded as one of the best pop-opera singers in the world and has performed at the world's major venues.
He has also worked as an editor for Weekly Kyunghyang and as an interviewer for Forbes Magazine (Korean edition). In December 2010, he was the first Korean to ever receive the United Nations Peace Medal for donating proceeds from a concert commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Korean War to descendants of veterans.
