He suffered from severe asthma as a child, so his parents encouraged him to practice a sport. He chose track and field, but he switched to snowboarding when a new club opened in middle school. With only around 300 registered snowboarders, he quickly rose to prominence, winning multiple National Winter Sports Festival titles and earning a spot on the national team when he was in high school.
He represented South Korea at four consecutive Winter Olympics (2014-2026), but it was not until the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina that he was finally successful, earning a silver medal in the parallel giant slalom. He became the oldest South Korean athlete to win an Olympic medal.
