He debuted as a soloist in 1962 when he won the Gold Prize at the Seoul Metropolitan Government Competition hosted by MBC. A few months later, he formed the group ARIRANG BROTHERS and also became widely known for his song "Animal Farm". In 1968, he formed a mixed country duo with singer Hyun Hye Jeong and one year later, he made his TV debut when he joined singer Ha Chung Il and performed in MBC's "Laughing Brings Blessings". The duo will become one of the legendary musicians of the 1960s and 1970s, winning TBC's Grand Award.
In 1988, he became a singing instructor after establishing his own academy and in 1992, he resumed his solo career with the album "The Story of Suh Soo Nam's World". He frequently appeared on KBS's "Family Entertainment Center" and still holds the record for the most appearances on the show between the mid-1980s and the late 2000s.
In 2013, he took some time off when his eldest daughter was killed in a car accident in the United States. He is now semi-retired due to his age.
