His older brother is actor Kataoka Matsuyan. He became a stage actor from early on under the name of Ichikawa Momotaro.
After working in the Ichikawa Ichizo 4th generation troupe, in 1920, he joined the Nikki Kyoto Studio with his brother who was in the Kataoka Gado troupe.
