Togawa Yukio was a Japanese novelist and children's writer born in Saga City. He established animal literature based on correct observations and knowledge about animals and is a leading figure in Japan alongside Muku Hatoju. He has also worked on reportage, war stories, and manga.

From an early age, Togawa loved animals and aspired to be a zoologist. Aiming for the Department of Paleobiology at Tohoku University, he entered the former Yamagata High School. Around this time, he independently investigated mountain dogs but had to drop out due to health issues. He joined the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun in 1937, becoming a reporter for the Social Affairs Department and serving in various places as a Chinese correspondent and a member of the Navy's press team. After the war, he went to work for Sun Photo Newspaper and then served as the director of the social department of the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun and the deputy editor of the daily graph.

In 1953, he participated in the Shin Hasegawa-sponsored Shintakakai and learned to write novels. He won the Naoki Prize for "Takayasu Inu Monogatari" and was called Japan's first full-scale animal literature author. Next, he retired from the newspaper company and started his life as a writer.

In 1962, he received the Sankei Children's Book Culture Award for "Kodomo no Tame no Dobutsu Monogatari." In March 1965, he obtained a specimen of the Iriomote cat in Okinawa before returning to the mainland. He was the catalyst for discovering the Iriomote cat, which was just a rumored species until then.

In 1977, he received the Minister of Education Award for Art Selection for "opening a new genre of animal literature in Japanese literature and creating a unique high peak" in "Togawa Yukio Dobutsu Bungaku Zenshu." He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1980, and in 1985 he became a Person of Cultural Merit for children. In 1986 he received the Order of the Sacred Treasure.

He has also been a board member of the Japan Animal Welfare Association, the World Wildlife Conservation Fund Japan Committee, the Elsa Nature Conservation Society, and the Savannah Club (East African Friends Association). Edit Biography
