Beautiful Scenery, Hot Chemistry, but a Rushed Romance
Just like The Summer You Kissed Me, I decided to watch the 58 minute movie version of Awakening the Steppe on GagaOOLala instead of watching the six individual episodes. I am honestly glad I did because the movie format made everything flow much better and it was very easy to finish in one sitting.
This is my second time watching Wang Chen Rui, and once again, he did not disappoint. His acting was good, he looked great on screen, and that shirtless body with those muscles definitely caught my attention. This was my first time watching Zai Qiao Yuan, and I thought he was also a great actor. The two of them looked good together and had convincing chemistry, especially during the more intimate moments.
The story itself is quite simple. Muer is a veterinary student living among the beautiful grasslands when he comes across Lei Ze Xin, who is injured after an encounter with wolves. After Muer helps him, the two begin spending more time together and their relationship quickly develops into something romantic.
And when I say quickly, I mean extremely quickly. Within only a few days, they are already talking about loving each other and wanting to spend the rest of their lives together. I understand the idea of love at first sight, but this was still too fast for me. Attraction and falling for someone quickly is believable, but promising your entire future to someone you have only known for a few days needed much more development.
One of the biggest strengths of this BL is definitely the visuals. The summer setting is absolutely beautiful, with endless greenery, open grasslands and mountains creating a peaceful and romantic atmosphere. There were many moments where I was simply enjoying the scenery. It gave the series its own identity and made it visually different from many other BLs.
The other major strength was the chemistry. The kissing scenes were passionate and the NC scenes were hot. My favourite was definitely the tent scene. I loved the confident and possessive energy from Lei Ze Xin when he was on top of Muer and joked about wanting to buy him. When Muer said he was expensive, Lei Ze Xin basically responded that it did not matter because he could afford him. That entire scene really showed their chemistry and Lei Ze Xin taking control.
Unfortunately, the plot itself was the weakest part. There simply was not enough time for the relationship or story to properly develop. Everything happened so quickly that some of the emotional moments did not have enough time to make an impact. I also found the ending confusing and was left wondering exactly what the series was trying to tell us.
Overall, Awakening the Steppe is a light and visually stunning BL with beautiful scenery, attractive leads, strong chemistry and some great kissing scenes, but the story needed more development. I really wish it had been longer because the relationship could have been much more convincing with additional time.
It is not one of the best BLs I have watched, but it is certainly not one of the worst either. At only 58 minutes, it is incredibly easy to binge in one sitting.

Now I am looking forward to seeing Wang Chen Rui again in Till I See You, which releases tomorrow.
