The best thing about lovely runner is that it doesn't feel like you are too old to enjoy this. Pitfalls of youth rom com is that you tend to feel like the story/tone target audience is not made for your demographics. Lovely Runner so far has done a decent job of maintaining that innocent charm that does not annoy a apathetic adult, yet maintaining its depth in youthful characters yes they are teenagers but they are not vacuous, and overall message of hope, friendship, surviving in life regardless of what you lost, falling in love all these are not age specific themes hence why lovely runner has a universal appeal. The script so far is very crisp, tightly strung without losing focus, there are very little mistakes except for the jarring yellow umbrella mistake wish they had maintained that important detail.
Sing praise to Byeon Woo Seok, umbrella in the snow where Im Sol is in wheel chair scene, when we see it from her POV we can interpret it as him being a good samaritan there is no obvious indications that he knows her. However when they show the scene from his POV she is the same but his expressions change just enough to display longing/grief/guilt, the acting is not so drastically different so it does not become a completely new scene but now we get the full picture of that night. Kudos to the actor for grasping the subtle changes without overplaying it.
Question where is the eldest son who was banned by the grandfather for plotting against him, has he appeared on the show since the last confrontation. Was he at the funeral, what happened to the conspiracy theories that he was plotted against to be banished from the family. Where is his character???
The pace is super fast, we know what the leads true feelings are early on and the confession looks like it will happen early. This puts the worry on can they maintain this level of intensity for 16 episodes???? Kim Aye Yoo is well cast she has the youthful face that can play high school as well as they can age her up to be an adult and importantly she does positive energy really well without it being cringe or annoying, it is natural and innocent. Byeon Woo Seok has THE FACE, he was all the rage last year as Ryu Shi Oh so can't go wrong with him he knows how to deliver his lines with the appropriate emotions while looking extremely beautiful.
For those of us who hung on for Lee Jae Wook's sake hooorraayyyyyy to us. Now let us go forth forget this ASAP and wish him the best of luck in his next project, all the superstar actors of kdrama land do several projects in their career that will fail it is all a learning experience. LJW is still a mighty talent.
cross over was done smoothly without being contrived. the three leads got to shine, there was that hint of sarcastic comedy, tension, realism is there yes of course she would hire a mafia lawyer she is that gangster given her personality. points to song as Vincenzo he remained in character in wit, sophistication and being threatening without overplaying it. you can criticize the leads getting divorced was not taken seriously. however tone of this drama has always been dark comedic, death, cancer, betrayal is all treated in an offhanded manner so ultimately Vincenzo handling their divorce did not steal the spotlight but added that extra layer fun to a sad moment.
The writer should have just picked one. Chaebol story or the FL's illness.
I feel the same way, because what she has is no minor illness and there is no reality in dealing with bankruptcy and cancer treatment and not have foot in death's door due to stress. I think they showed her getting lumbar puncture, you cannot walk after that procedure it is very painful but we see her next scene running around in heels. Physical illness is a plot device just like how they treat alcoholism or mental illness in kdramas. Weaving all this together seamlessly was always going to be messy.
Writers should have leveled the playing field more between the leads regarding their actions, create a deeper moral dilemma allowing the plot to be more compelling. If SH committed pre-meditated murder, she didn't talk to father just ran him over then SY might have a small justification for his misplaced anger. SY father is a SOB that had no remorse for killing a child, SH was a in trance she wasn't even in the correct state of mind when she did what she did. SY lashing out randomly when the source of his misery is his own father does not generate any sympathy for his pain. Ultimately if the justified desire for revenge between them felt more equal then the subsequent emotional battle between them would be more tragic, but the writers chose a simple path taking the nuance out of the story stamping out genuine discussions on the morality of it all.
The drama has done a good job of showing a couple no they never fell out of love, they just needed a reminder that they still love each other. Hyun Woo wanting a divorce, saying he hated her, even momentarily wishing she was dead or wanting her money was all peak frustration this is very realistic when you love someone that deeply they let you down your feelings can swing in extremes but that does not mean you really mean what you say. Hyun Woo went to such a dark place he is back and now Hae In has to go through it, ultimately they will find their way back to each other.
There is a difference between falling in love for the first time, and then finding that love again in a relationship that has gone stale. Both the actresses are doing a wonderful job in changing their expressions from the past to the present, when they first fell in love there is wonder, innocence, shyness in their interactions. However now when they are rekindling their relationship innocence is replaced with familiarity, original shyness has turned awkward, wonder is transformed into pain confusion happiness that not all is lost.
Haein's mother is like most of the boy mommy. She definitely doesn’t hate her daughter but loves her male children…
That is an excellent point if the genders are reversed she lost her daughter instead of the eldest male heir she would not have hated her son. This is realistic it plays into the whole traditional family mindset, a son more valuable than a daughter and why she hangs on to the last son she has. The mother is vile but she is realistic. Sure once she finds out hae-in is ill she will get all emotional and start caring for her daughter, but that does undo the years of abuse, neglect, toxic behavior which obviously everyone will forgive as if it is nothing.
Seon Yul is so funny cos what does he mean he wants to take everything precious from Soo Hyun as if his father…
I agree his revenge make no ethical sense, his father killed a little boy has he no shame. even if the father didn't do it was taking the fall for someone else man stood there mocking the child's death in front of a grieving mother just for that he deserved to lose his head. soon yul is psychotic his family is not the only family, soo hyun had a family too that his father destroyed, I guess revenge grief sees no logic. seon yul does not need to do anything soo hyun has no son, has no real career, and her cheating loser husband is out the exit door, she really has nothing of value that he can take from her other than her life.
I think the only way they can resurrect this dying drama is they show that this was TaeOH's plan all along he knew InHa was using him and HyeWon did not love him. The whole I live only for my psycho friend and devoted in love to an emotionally scheming woman for 10 years does not make sense to his type of calculating character. TaeOH knew they were being watched on the terrace but he played along to drive InHa mad and self destruct. He cannot have foreseen the murder but he knew InHa will do something and had contingency plans in place. The impossible heir cannot be the three sons, there is nothing impossible about a son legitimate or illegitimate inheriting a chaebol business, it is a man's world. President is shown to be eccentric from the start he does not love the sons, but has a soft spot for his daughter and he likes TaeOH, they are the impossible heirs. If the writer ends on that note there is some redemption, obviously it cannot salvage everything because the overall writing/direction has been novice, but atleast the end can be memorable.
Question- have we seen HyeWon have flashbacks about TaeOh at any point? TaeOh had that flashback showing all three…
that is a good question, but the writing and direction has been abysmal so far that I can't think it was intentional on their part to show something more nuanced. TaeOh and Huijoo are the only 2 characters who genuinely love hence they remember, but the InHa and HyeWon are cold villains.
Is it believable that three years married couple dont know each other character and habits... especially husband...…
if you are referring to the drinking part, she mentioned she doesn't drink she lives extremely healthy lifestyle, so her husband would not have known about a habit she did not practice any longer. he seemed shocked when seeing her drunk it is something he has never witnessed before. the villain knows because she was probably drinking back in the past and quit by the time she met the ML.
TaeOh is a masochist, did we miss something before, was this explained to us earlier on why he is like this. Why does he want to martyr himself to people who do not care about him, why is he self destructive?
My issue with this drama lies solely in the fact that the writer wants us to care about these characters but does…
perfect summation it is not necessary to like the characters but we have to understand who these people are, and it feels like a blank slate. None of their actions have any weightage, bad or good what is there to care about we don't know these people.
