Personally I don't think TJC would approve of the romance-focused version of the script, he's not the type to accept a role for the number of viewers. On the contrary, he chooses a role he can identify with, complex, with many facets and inner struggles and I have a feeling we won't even see the epilogue. So, I am with you on this.
