The complexity of humans
Definitely a hard watch. I understand the message of the episode, of trying to show the pov of the parent with the traditional homophobic views. However, I am so, so sick of the narrative that mistreatment must be forgiven because it's your parents and they just grew up that way. There was no real repentance. Her blaming him, telling him to not make the "mistake" again, slapping him, etc. And the consequence of all of this abuse was her son's pain, which the show framed as something she had to go through. His suffering, which she had a hand in, was her burden. I understand it is in a way her pain and that people are nuanced and such. And maybe my mindset is harsh, but I just need people to face directly what they've done, call it a need for karma or revenge, or however you like. But at the end of the day, her son, who suffered the most, has to be the one to give the most grace. A mindset that continues to be portrayed in media again and again.
