I don’t know what the people who claim this drama was accurate/realistic saw. Maybe because people looked normal in a normal setting, they associated it to accuracy of the storyline.

The actors acted well but we have to be honest that the writing of the second half was a big disappointment.

XiuXiu became insufferable and her voice started to annoy me because of that. I fast forwarded a lot during the last episodes.

Did they ever catch NiWei? I didn’t see but maybe I missed it.

SuSu stupidly dies after giving birth to the child she had with the man who used to sell things in the village (they became a couple later).

Her stupid death: she ended up giving birth to her child in the house of her dead ex husband. The SIL lost her mind after Weindan died so she decided to poison SuSu, her new husband and herself. She felt that SuSu betrayed the family by going with another man. Why the death was stupid? SuSu decided to sit and eat the food served by a mentally ill woman.

XiuXiu made peace with her dad on the last episode. The man ended up donating almost all his land to the political party who wanted to help farmers.

Everyone dies at the end but XiuXiu that you see in old age walking around her childhood house that is now a museum. Her husband dies before her in a flood. His spirit comes back to get her and they go on…

According to some people, the ending is “accurate” for the time. For me it was a normal ending but the lack of consistency with the leads characters and the switch of focus in the drama is what annoyed me about the ending. I can spoil it more for you if you want, let me know.

Definitely one of the best this year which is good but that says a lot about the quality of dramas lately.

I’ll speak for myself, I was not asking for a happy ending with everyone singing and dancing in circles. I understand it was a hard time for villagers at the time BUT what I wanted was CONSISTENCY in the writing. We have to be honest that the first half and the second half feel like 2 different dramas. The personalities of the main characters changed a lot for example.

The writer of the DRAMA should have stayed consistent with her writing and decided what she wanted to portray.

No one watches dramas for accuracy. You find accuracy in documentaries.

There are plenty of classic MOVIES (not documentaries) that portray a more romanticized script from hard times, those movies are considered “classics”.

“Gone With the Wind”, “The Pianist”, “ Schindler's List”, “Life Is Beautiful”, “Roots”… hard historical events were discussed but one of the reasons the movies were good was thanks to the CONSISTENCY in the writing and the normal evolution of the characters.

We didn’t have that here and that’s why imo, the DRAMA was a let down.

The drama was not really an accurate representation of the village life back then. The big idea of historical events were there but a lot was romanticized. If it was truly accurate XiuXiu for example wouldn’t be walking proud and talking among the ignorant villagers after what happened to her… the first half was good but the second half was not consistent.

No we couldn’t see her do that because that would make us happy and apparently we can’t have that for the sake of “aCcUrAcY”… who watches dramas for accuracy anyway?

I’ll be upset about this for a while, it was so unnecessary.

Almost everything about this drama was unrealistic. A woman with bandits not being raped, a woman ruling the village and people listening to her, a woman being the only one with wisdom at the time etc…. It’s a drama, they made everything else unrealistic, you said it yourself that the book was darker.

If we wanted accuracy all the way, we would have stuck to the history books, a documentary or the accurate novel.

Also, what happened to SuSu at the end had nothing to do with historical fact, it was either naivety or stupidity.

👆💯💯… I’m not looking forward to any dramas anymore because of this. I don’t know why they do this, a drama starts off strong but halfway it turns into disaster. I started noticing the phenomenon early this year, I’ve dropped almost all the dramas I was looking forward to.
