Well… That Was Certainly a Story
Giving this an 8, and that’s me being generous because honestly, I could give this a 7 or even less. But because of how much effort they put into the cinematography, production quality, and acting, I’m leaving it at this score. Even the nosy neighbours annoyed the hell out of me, but I suppose that just means the actors did their jobs a little too well.
Now, the writing. What was happening? What was going on here?
I can admit that the production was of high quality, but I can also admit that the concept was goofy. And by the end, goofy doesn’t even feel like the right word anymore. This was just plain ridiculous. I spent half the series wondering where exactly they were going with this, and by the end, I was still wondering what the point was.
Is it a cute story? I genuinely don’t know. And I’m being very honest when I say that. It’s definitely a story, that’s for sure, but I don’t know if I can call it cute. There were moments I enjoyed, but the further we got into it, the more I found myself questioning what exactly I was supposed to feel about everything happening on screen.
I kept asking myself, what exactly are we supposed to take away from this? I know it’s fiction. Obviously. I’m not expecting robots to start crying and eating human food in real life. But if you’re going to build a story around a human being developing a romantically charged relationship with a robot, then have that robot become increasingly human-like, I feel like there should be something more to it. Something that makes me understand why this story needed to be told this way.
Instead, we got a woman falling completely apart over a robot, insisting that the robot is human, and treating her loss like she had lost an actual person. And I’m sorry, but I just could not take it seriously.
There were also several things with the plot that I felt could have been handled much better. I definitely think there was a better way to tell this story, because the concept itself could have been explored in a much more interesting way.
Despite all of that, I still have to commend everyone involved for the production. The cinematography was beautiful, the acting was great, and they clearly put a lot of effort into making and, honestly, enduring this story.
