Expectations unfortunately not met

Dance is neither about technique nor stamina. Love is what makes it whole

🕺🏻OK. Let's start with the good🕺🏻
The acting - The guys killed it. I have seen Keita before in Cherry Magic & Alice in Borderland and was excited to see him back in the BL realm. I knew he was good and my man; he did not disappoint. No notes
Ryoma is a new face to me, but he was amazing too. He expresses emotions so freaking well. It just grabs you. I could feel how much he hated Sugiki in the beginning, when he started wanting him; I was there with him—in that desire, denial, and confusion. And when Sugiki broke his heart, I felt that too. When he cried, when he made the choice to go back to competing after the heartbreak, when he struggled to walk away from Sugiki's honor dance, when he finally faced him on that floor. I felt it all. Hat's off to the man

The chemistry - My God!! It was palpable. Everyone has mentioned it, but that scene in the train... *fans self*. And the kiss scene towards the end. Also, I was mesmerised every time they danced together

Their type of dance matched their personalities beautifully - Sugiki does ballroom. Idk much about dance, but from what I saw in this, it's a very controlled type of dancing. Beautiful to look at, but rigid in its execution.
On the other hand, Suzuki is a free spirit. He also walks, breaths, moves like sex, and so is his dance style. It's fun and sexy, while Suguki's is very restrained.
Suzuki wants to have fun in his life, but Sugiki is very controlled and by the book. He knows what he wants, sees the goal, and will stick by it, everything else be damned.
How they dance spills into their personalities. Or is it vice versa?

The cinematography and the grandeur of it all - Are we surprised though? It's a Netflix production. You know the production budget be budgeting

🕺🏻What I didn't like🕺🏻
The title says it all. The movie did not match the expectations set by the trailer
When you watch the trailer, you expect the movie to be very sensual, very sexy. You expect their relationship to be very emotionally charged. A love that stems from hate, passion (for dance and Suzuki's hatred for Sugiki), desire, and an unwitting respect for each other's craft. I was at the edge of my seat waiting for such a story

Unfortunately, when you get to the story, this all kinda... fades away? A lot of the story is told in silence (?). There are a lot of looks to the other person, facial expressions, but very little in the way of actual communication. As the audience, you kinda have to connect the dots and guess what they are feeling and thinking. That removes the 'punch' of what this story could be

Their romance — if you could even call it that — doesn't progress much, and so by the end, everything feels unfinished. They kissed on the train. I thought things would get steamier, but they went their separate ways. Only to meet 2(?) months later in the UK with Suzuki thinking about how he wants Sugiki's eyes on him.... And then they break up

Girl... What?? What happened in the 2 months??? I have read some comments by the Manga readers that allude to what happened after the train, leading up to the breakup, and after, but if you're going to make a movie, shouldn't you include what happens in the source material in the show? I feel like cutting out major details does a disservice not only to the viewers who may not have checked out the book, but also to the readers who may want a better portrayal of a story they love

The ending was also very.... Ugh. It's open-ended. Not a fan of those. I hear it's because the manga isn't complete. Perhaps the manga shall end n we'll get a sequel. Hopefully, a better installation than this one

It's Fine - That's the Highest Compliment I can Give It

You ever watched a story and found yourself thinking, 'had this aired at a different time, or perhaps if I were a different personI'd have liked (tolerated) it better?' When this started airing, I thought I'd love it. I left myself a note at the end of episode 2 stating how much I enjoyed how the plot and setting both reminded me of 'Business Proposal' & 'Welcome to Samdal-ri'. Dramas that, while I thoroughly enjoyed, had (and still get) scathing reviews.

The scathing comments kept coming in, and for the initial 5 episodes, I tuned them out. The show worked for me, and I like what I like, so whatever. Screw what the naysayers were peddling. However, after episode 6, I started slowly siding with the masses.😭

Let's start with what I liked
🍄‍🟫The comedy - They did have some funny bits. Did I find myself laughing to the point I lost my breath or had tears running down my face? No. But they did manage to get several chuckles out of me.

🍄‍🟫References to previous dramas - They had Anh Hyo Seop on the team, and they decided to milk that for all it was worth. They had multiple references to 'Business Proposal' -some obvious, some not-, as well as K-pop Demon Hunters. I also believe that the sprinkler kiss in the mushroom greenhouse was a little nod to 'King the Land.' That's my kind of fanservice and I was very happy about it.

🍄‍🟫The live selling aspect - This is purely based on the fact that it's a niche interest of mine. I kept wishing (and still do wish) that they gave us a deeper look into that. Because 2 reasons
a. It serves a particular interest of mine.
b. It showcases a much different career path than what we're used to in dramas

🍄‍🟫The villagers and Dam Ye Jin's 2 coworkers - The villagers' r/ship with Mechoori was quite endearing to watch - you know, b4 they turned on him. I liked that tsundere r/ship he had with them. I loved how Dam Ye Jin and her coworkers remained friends, and they had her back despite her being kicked out after the scandal. They worked well together

My Frustrations
🍄‍🟫Noble Idiocy - Ah! The Achilles heel of many a Kdrama (Cdramas and Jdramas included).
So both characters are struggling with things in their past. Ordinarily, I would be empathetic; however, I found myself struggling in this case. If you look objectively at both their past traumas, any reasonable person would at least suspect a setup. Even without damning evidence against the other party.

Based on that, the burden they chose to carry (because, yes, this was very much a choice, and a bad one at that) really made no sense to me. I understand when authors and screenwriters wanna write green flag, pure characters, who feel deeply, but it comes to a point that..... Nah man.

🍄‍🟫The therapy debate (or, rather, the lack thereof)
Our mains needed some serious therapy to help deal with the issues of the past. But, despite being well off enough to afford it, no one suggests, considers, or seeks it. She, abuses sleeping pills to the point of detrimental side effects and is a workaholic. He, on the other hand, hides, becoming a corporate life recluse in an idyllic farming village.

I would want to yell at this drama for this one, but this is an overarching Kdrama issue - not one specifically tied to this one show. Therapy is for the birds in dramas. Depression, suppressed trauma, and other mental health issues are fixed by copious amounts of alcohol (I'm looking at you, Doctor Slump), comeuppance, and the amazing power of love... sigh

🍄‍🟫How do time and distance work in this world?
In the 1st (?) ep when she has to go to the village to meet him, it takes the better part of the morning. She also mentioned that she needed to leave the village early as she had a broadcast later that night. When they started meeting daily so he could give her the meds, they showed on the navigation that he'd have to drive about 2, maybe 2.5 hrs to get back to Seoul. This is at around 1/2 am, when one would assume there's no traffic.

Now, based on those instances, can someone tell me how this man got from the village to Seoul and managed to save her from almost getting run over that one night? Can he teleport? Could his car achieve speeds of light speeds and they never told us? I hate it when seemingly turn off your brains shows make me turn my brain back on. You need to find a balance with the absurd, unbelievable nonsense. I can only gaslight myself so much

🍄‍🟫The sleepwalking and the sleep phone calls - Went on for too damn long

🍄‍🟫 I wish we had gotten her mother's side of the story.
Something more than 'I will sabotage and be rude to my daughter for years after the tabloids said that she took a bribe to sabotage my career - and she said she did in a heated moment.' I think the story about a woman choosing a career over being a mother is such an interesting one.

We rarely see these types of stories. It sucks that they never explored it. I would've liked to see her internal battle/struggle with this vs the trauma on the child, coz both sides are valid. We only get to see how Dam Ye Jin was hurt, but never quite the mom's side. But perhaps this particular drama wasn't the best vessel for such a deep and nuanced conversation

🍄‍🟫The romance/chemistry - I didn't get butterflies or swoon. Were they cute? Sure. But while they told me they were in love and they acted as people in love, I didn't buy into it. Into their chemistry.

This is in comparison to dramas like 'Filling for Love' and 'My Royal Nemesis'.

As I type this, the former is 2 episodes from the finale, and so far, I have loved the chemistry between the main characters. I bought into their journey to each other and the romance. They are swoonworthy and spicy. In the latter drama, both of them are crazy. We are halfway through airing, so they have every chance to fuck it up (fingers crossed they don't), but their journey so far is more on the giggle, kick your feet side.

Now having this show air in tandem with the other two... yeah, not a fair fight. The romance and chemistry in this were certainly and glaringly lacking.

🍄‍🟫Final Thoughts🍄‍🟫
While it did start with the potential to be good in my eyes, the plot, pacing, and absurdity of some choices and sequences put me off the show. IMO, skip it. But if you wanna try it, perhaps watch it as a background noise drama. It has some good, but they are overshadowed by the bad.

They had me for the 1st 13 episodes, then they lost me, and never got me back.

I am sorry to anyone who chooses to read this review. I do not think I'll be very coherent.

The best way to explain this drama from my experience watching it would be 'Pretty Aesthetics, Boring Plot.'
Here's how I watched this show -
🍉I consumed the 1st 13 episodes in one day like a woman starving.
🍉Watched episodes 14 -23 with the feeling that something was missing.
🍉Skipped episodes 24 - 28 to watch episodes 29 and 30.
🍉Skipped episodes 31 - 34, fast-forwarded through episode 35, and the finale

My thoughts about the characters
🌞NXG - I think she was a decent character. There's nothing about her that's particularly outstanding. She's a simple girl just trying to navigate life and find where she truly belongs. Her only 'fault' is that she comes from an extremely rich family. This inadvertently makes life harder for her, largely due to the jealousy of those whom she unfortunately considers friends. There's also her terrible taste in men (one man), but more on that later.

🧑🏻‍⚕️LYS - He is perfect, which makes him boring. IMO, he was the most interesting when he was in basically one-sided conflict with NXG. I genuinely disliked him and wasn't rooting for him till the balcony to hospital arc with NXG.

His beautiful face and long legs were not enough to make me disregard his bullying and abuse of power towards NXG. His reasoning - which held no water btw - be damned. Once he apologized and changed for the better, I did forgive him for it. But I never forgot. He eventually became the perfect textbook boyfriend. Fantastic for NXG, a snoozefest for me

😤ZX - He was draining, OMG. Self-pitying, self-hating, insecure, and so, so mean to the supposed love of his life. I spent most of my time on this show wondering why NXG liked him in the 1st place. Was it all because he was tall and (they thought) he had a pretty face? Coz, honestly, he had no redeeming qualities.

When they were in college, he would insult her with every word that came out of his mouth. He didn't believe her when she got wrongly accused, nor did he stand up for her. Let's not forget how he made her walk in heels coz he didn't want to pay taxi fare for both of them. She could've simply paid him back.

He also never said 'sorry,' not that it'd have made up for anything, but that's the bare minimum he could've done. For example, when he found out the truth about the interview call situation, he sent her good research materials for her thesis. Thoughtful, yes, but where was the actual 'sorry'?

Here's a note I wrote about ZX after ep 12

"Ep 12: Now we finally get the back story of why he was always so mean to her. I feel sad for him that he's this heartbroken because of his unwavering trust in Ye Rong. However, I'm not that sorry for him.
I cannot forget how cutting his words were. How they've always been. And sure, Ye Rong lied to him and those around him coz of her insecurity, but that doesn't negate the fact that
1. He liked NXG but never made a move to ever ask her about her side of the story. His blind belief and willingness to stand on the sidelines as she was insulted and slandered is his fault
2. He also never made his stand clear. He knew both Ye Rong and NXG liked him. But he was always in the middle like an idiot. Never outrightly choosing one. He'd side with Rong, but never quite enough to fully claim her. Never correcting her when she loudly claimed him b4 everyone, but never giving her the security she needed

Sorrows, sorrows, prayers to him."

Clearly, I hated the man, but found him interesting. No other character elicited such strong emotion from me.

😒Ye Rong - All I'll say about her is that jealousy truly makes you such an ugly person. I mean this literally because I only realized how pretty the actress playing Ye Rong was in ep 35. I hope that she became a better person after moving to Shenzen. That she never found some other poor, innocent girl to cut down with her words, simply because she never felt like she was enough. Like she couldn't measure up to whatever one-sided goal she had in her head.

About the story in general
I really loved the story in those first 13 episodes. I think the pacing and conflict were great, plus NXG's new experiences from college, moving on to adult work-life, and friendships kept things interesting. However, once the conflict with LYS takes a back seat, the plot loses its momentum.

They are pretty, they communicate, work together seamlessly, and their immediate families love them - they are perfect, and I was bored out of my mind. My mind couldn't help wandering as nothing about the story was holding my attention anymore.

Random Thoughts:
🤔One gripe in other overall sensibility of the plot...: What do you mean that someone went to school, got a degree in finnace and you move them to administration?? Why was everybody okay with that? I know it's a drama, and forced proximity had to be applied to make the romance grow.
However, my brain refuses to compute that no one found it odd or complained about the blatant misuse of power. I'd rather they'd fired her than that. Like, would you move a marketing graduate to engineering? Someone from procurement, to admin, or HR? Engineering to sales? Finance to the legal department? That shit pissed me off the entire show.

🏂🏾Oh, another thing, did anyone think that the Changbai Mountain arc felt like a super drawn-out AD? Lowkey, I felt like it was a govt sponsored AD. Something interesting about that arc is how they incorporated a 2024 trend in that episode where LYS & NXG's cousin were competing. The editing style showing how cool they were is very much reminiscent of a video I saw back in 2024 on Chinese netizens taking pics on snowy mountains

🍊That juice they (mostly the women) kept drinking during gatherings, which was another very obvious AD, reminded me of Minute Maid. I don't even like those juices, esp the orange flavour, but now I'm craving some

For The Reverse Harem, Sub ML Loving Girlies

There's always something that draws me to a drama. For this, it was an edit I saw on Twitter. I saw Jianglai on his knees, looking up at Shanbao with those pleading puppy dog eyes, and they had me. Hook, Line & Sinker. Then I found out there was a reverse harem element to it and... Yeah, there was no hope for me. I was going to see this to the end. And that, I did.

🫖What I Liked🫖
🥰The Female Lead - They told me that I was getting a cold and cunning female lead, and they delivered. Throughout the show, Shanbao remains clever (and manipulative), maneuvering not only the men seeking to woo her, but also the tea business, and her very complicated family dynamics. Not once did I feel like she fell back and let the ML run the show. True to her family's traditions, the women are at the helm. And that's where she stayed till the end.

🥰 The Male Lead - Now, if we start talking about my love for male submissives, we'd spend all day here. All you should know is that they have a very special place in my heart. And my 'God, when?' prayer is still very much alive and well in this aspect.
Aside from the perfectly submissive man that Jianglai is, he's also smart and useful. My fear going into this was that he'd 'hide behind her skirts', always waiting for her to save him. Not only can he stand on his own, but he's also clever, ambitious, loving, dedicated, and cares about her business. Lu Jianglai's puppy-dog eyes may have brought me into this show, but his taking the time to learn about the tea business and help out where needed, without having to be told, won me over.

🥰The 5th Sister - Would I say I loved YunShu? No. But she was by far the most interesting of Shanbao's sisters. Miss Ma'am had me suspicious and freaking out for like 22 episodes. A true definition of a snake in the grass. She was also really smart. I respect smart characters, regardless of whether they are the villain or not.

🥰The sisters' relationship - In the beginning, it was tumultuous, at best. Over time, however, it evolves into what true sisterhood is. All the ladies grow, understand each other, and change, leading to a united Rong family. The kind that their ancestors had created and hoped for, for their future generations.

🥰The tea tidbits that were shown at the end of some episodes - I'm from a predominantly tea-drinking country but we have NOTHING over China. I mean, I didn't think we had anything close to them, but those tidbits showed me just how vast the difference is. The history of tea in China is truly vast and rich. Incredible

🫖Things I Didn't Like/Appreciate🫖
👵🏻Grandmother - Listen, I am all for respecting your elders, but this woman.... Yo! She had me heated. She was out here, increasing my blood pressure from how utterly horrible she was. YunShu and I might not have agreed on a bunch of things, but I was squarely on her side when she mentioned that their grandmother was basically the root of all evil. At least in their family.

She was supposed to guide the sisters. Help foster their relationships not just for their good but also for the good of the family legacy and traditions. But no, she made 1 mistake back when she was young, and her embarrassment over that became every generation's problem after that. Not only did she become like those rich snobby nobles, but she, a woman from a matriarchal home, becomes patriarchal - the biggest sin of all IMO. Believing that the man, the match between her daughters and some man determines their success as a family. She had zero faith in her family members

That person who called granny a 'dusty bag of bones' was on to something. She's entirely horrible, callous, and so judgmental towards her family. Let's not even start on how loudly she insulted a child of 4/5 years. I'm too young for a blood pressure medication prescription.

📚The story from episode 26, but largely from ep 30 - I would try to leave a note after every episode or every 2 episodes. However, after episode 25, I stopped. Clearly, that's where my excitement for the show started waning. But I think the biggest letdown was from ep 30. I don't quite know what the point of Jianglai's 2nd (and apparently OG) family was for.
At 1st, I thought they wanted to highlight the sad reality of the women from this time. The Rong family is obviously the exception, being matriarchal in a patriarchal society.

A quote that stuck with me from this arc was said by the duke's wife. It partly states
"Even if her father committed a grave mistake and disobeyed her grandmother's orders, as a daughter, she should kneel and beg again and again. Even if it meant not eating or drinking, starving to death. She should have sought her grandmother's forgiveness."
It clearly shows how the women of this time were expected to pay for the sins of the men in their lives. And were even punished for them. I thought that this was the point. To show the stark difference in how the Rong family treated both their men and women, and how the rest of the world did.

However, as the arc unfolds, things get weird, with the biggest issue being that Shanbao and Jianglai no longer work together. She seemed to be making decisions for him, doing that whole 'I'm hurting him to protect him from him/myself'. I fucking hate that trope. And then it was a family drama/murder mystery.... It was a lot, and for what?

All in all, I didn't appreciate those last 7 episodes. It felt like they used it to increase the viewer's anxiety about whether Shanbao and Jianglai would make it to the end together. Instead of all that, we should've gotten the final ACTUAL wedding, and a glimpse into the sisters' stories with their men. Namely, Yunshu & Bai Yi Sheng, Xiang Ling & Zhu Sheng (Jiang Lai's deputy. I'm making the executive decision that they belong together), as well as YunXi & her baby daddy ( I forget his name)

It was great, but it's not without faults

👻What I Enjoyed/Liked👻
1. A1 cinematography & production - So incredibly well done that I can confidently say that it's among the best that I've seen this year. Also, the village setting was so well done.

2. The inclusion of Thai culture, outfits, shamanic practices, etc. They were all so grand and beautiful. I haven't seen another Thai show that includes this (granted, all I watch from Thailand is BLs), so this was super interesting to see

3. The overall story - This doesn't get a 10/10, but for the most part, the story was well done. Throughout the 12 episodes, they gave us a lot of background info on the characters and how they all connected to each other, making everything feel cohesive. By the end of the story, there aren't many loose ends

4. The acting - I think the cast, the main 4, are largely rookies, and they did a really good job. I have seen cringeworthy acting in the BL scene. These four, they deserve their flowers. I hope to see them get even better in the future

5. The NC scenes in eps 7 & 8 - Aside from the fact that they were so very hot, I feel like they suited the couples perfectly. Chan & Jet are more playful, and so was their scene. Peem & Khem are more angsty and slowburn, and their scene reflected that beautifully.
Edit: After rewatching the show (now that it's on Netflix), I have an appreciation for the NC scene in ep 12. It didn't hit for me when I 1st watched the show. I found it a little boring. But now... yeah. I was wrong. Kudos to the actors and the director. It's such a beautiful and well-made scene

👻What I Didn't Like/Areas That Could've Been Worked On👻
1. Ramphueng should've received an apology. From her backstory, we see that they wronged her 1st. Her revenge - crazy as it was-, was justified. What that family did to her was horrible. In episode 12, they make her apologize, but why didn't they apologize to her, too? For over 200 years, no one ever said 'sorry' for playing a part in the unjust death of her and her son. Khem and his mother should've apologized to her for the parts that their past selves played in that

2. Does anyone know if Ramphueng went after all the people in that family (including the 1st wife and polygamous husband), or was it just Khem and his mother? I mean, Khem's testament (as Krongkhwan) was what put the nail in the proverbial coffin of her death, but... what happened to the other people throughout the years? Did she go after everyone? Coz if so, miss ma'am was one hell of a busy ghostly bee

3. Khem/Namping's crying scenes - When he has to sit and cry silently, it works. It's great. But when more emotions are needed, like he needs to be on the floor sobbing, it doesn't work. IDK if this makes sense, but during these intense crying/emotional scenes, as a viewer, I can tell that he's acting (and that it's not going well)

3. Khem & Peem don't have much in the way of facial expressions - Peem is stoic, and Khem is either sad, faking a smile or on the verge of crying. I don't want to judge too harshly since perhaps this worked because that is who the characters were. However, in the future, I'd love to see Keng and Namping use their facial muscles more in whatever show they'll be on. As per the latter half of the last episode, we see that they are clearly capable of it, so let them use them.

4. Khem was always the damsel in distress, and surprisingly, doesn't have much vigor to stay alive - This might be the thing that pissed me off the most. We started the show with Khem wanting to find a way to survive past the age of 21, then his friends suggested that Peem might like him, and suddenly, all he could care about was whether Peem liked him back?! Sir?!?!?!?! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PLOT??? Listen, I understand that this is a BL. That they are meant to fall in love but... Priorities man. Vengeful ghosts 1st, romance later. Also, him up and leaving after Grandma Si died.... Come on now

5. The timeline - I might be horrendously bad at math, but I believe that the mid-1700s were at most 275 years ago. Where did the 400 years that they kept talking about come from?

6. Peem should have had a longer chasing arc - He was so mean for so long. He should've had to struggle and prove himself for longer to win Khem's affection and trust

👻Random Thoughts👻
a. Those villagers were so cool with all the ghosts. If it were me, I'd have left and never gone back😂

b. We largely saw Khem interact with ghosts that wanted him ☠️. I wish we saw his interactions with nice or at least neutral ghosts. Like the ghost mama in ep 1, who simply wanted to save her son

Would've Likely Been Great with Better Pacing

When working with a thriller/mystery drama, you have to keep your pacing really tight; otherwise, you risk losing your audience. If you solve the cases too quickly, you lose the impact and risk plot holes. Too slow and the audience gets bored/frustrated.

Unfortunately, this story falls in the latter half. Cases took too long to conclude (one case literally took 4 and a half episodes to solve). Honestly why? Some cases would keep going around and around themselves (like they were trying to be really smart), and when you finally got to the conclusion..., the payoff wasn't worth it.

The plot does get some points in telling stories, largely about the plight of women, but the message gets swallowed up by the aforementioned bad pacing. Also, I would've appreciated it if our main characters emoted a bit more. It's not fun watching a show where the characters only move between 2, maybe 3 facial expressions, traumatic background be damned.

I did enjoy the subtle romance, though. It wasn't loud, but it was really sweet and caring—especially from his side.

Put Your Phone Away & Pay Attention

You know those shows that you can watch while scrolling through your phone? The kind you can easily look away, and even without understanding the language, look up again and be able to piece everything, or at least most of it, together? This isn't one of those.

This is a show that demands your attention, which was fantastic for me since I really needed a good reason to put my phone away.

This is a beautifully written revenge story with brilliant characters. Such stories often fail because they are filled with dumb characters who risk the plans and lives (both their own and others') in their stupidity. No one here is like that. They know what the plan needs, and they stick to it, executing it as needed.

Xie Huai An's smarts are something to be admired and feared. I totally understood why his enemies were afraid of him. He will not face you on the battlefield with a sword. But he'll plan your defeat and your death, largely from the shadows, and you'll never see it coming.

I loved watching the growth of Xiao Wen Jing / Zhang Mo. From a spoilt, angry puppet emperor to a worthy young man. One who not only understood the plight of his people but was also able to make lifelong friends. Unfortunately, the Tiemo arc (more on that later) ruined his character growth a bit for me.
He'd grown so much as a person & come to trust Huai'an, but the plot throws away all this character growth, turning him back into his former cowardly self for shock value. I admit, I was shocked, as they wanted, but also felt disappointed

I commend all the actors for their effective portrayal of emotions. This show is heavy, and it always has this feeling of death and sadness hanging in the air. I loved that whenever the characters had to express their emotions, I, as the viewer, could connect with them

The story gave us two main villains, Yan Feng Shan & the King of Tiemo. Yan Feng Shan's arc was much more interesting to me. The amount of maneuvering and cleverness used in this arc was... breathtaking, for lack of a better word. The Tiemo arc wasn't bad per se, however, I did feel that as from ep 21 (or there about) the script relied a lot on plot armour to keep Huai'an alive.
There were so many times that he could've died in this arc, specifically from ep 21 to 24/25, yet he miraculously survived. I mean, he did survive while facing Yan Feng Shan, but here his escapes were less believable in their overall 'miraculousness'.

I'm not sure about the ending; it looked like he died. Idk how he'd have survived that explosion, unless more plot armour was applied. And while I would have loved for him to stay alive, I think that part of me was prepared for his death.

Xie Huai An was clever and brave, but also angry and incredibly sad. He rarely smiled, and when he did, it was always a sad smile. It always felt like his heart, his very soul, were very sad and very heavy. If he died, I'd take consolation in the thought that he finally got to rest

Points To Note
1. The rewatch value isn't that high. Not because the story isn't worth rewatching, but because I feel like this is one of those stories that works best the 1st time. A rewatch could work to help you pick up on a few factors that you may have missed in the 1st round, but the suspense and intrigue will no longer be there. Because of that loss, I wouldn't find myself rewatching this.

2. About 30 minutes after completing the Netflix version, I found out that this show has a special episode. The special episode very clearly insinuates that Huai'an is alive, just staying hidden in Yulong Ridge. We don't see his face, but the alcohol given to his friends and the voice of the guy in that cell belong to Huai'an. I'm sure he's still busy plotting and strategizing in there for the good of the realm.
But part of me wishes that he would've, instead, fulfilled the wish that his sister had for him. To sit under a (what I believe) plum blossom tree with a fat cat in his arms. With Ye Zheng & Zhang Mo bickering around him (This last bit is purely my wishful thinking)

Mature Well-Written Enemies-to-Lovers

It took me till the very end of ep 2 to get invested in this drama. While I love Shin Hae Sun and have enjoyed her in every drama I've seen her in (4 so far, including this one), I'd been considering dropping the show. However, now, 12 episodes later, I'm so happy that the email piqued my interest and convinced me to stay.

💌What I Loved💌
📂The Comedy
Not only did I find myself smiling at their antics, but I also genuinely found myself laughing out loud in multiple scenes throughout the show. While the show does become more serious (but not excessively so) in later episodes, the first few episodes reminded me of the 2022 drama Gaus Electronics. They need to make more absurd comedic dramas like that one

📂 The main couple - Mature, Hilarious, & they Communicate
You know those titkok and Reddit posts that are like 'which kdrama couple do you think ended up breaking up after the finale' (or something along those lines)? I am willing to fight anyone who would dare include this couple. Their start might have been a bit juvenile - as every enemies-to-lovers trope usually is - but as they grow, learn about each other, and eventually fall in love, they mature and fit together in the best possible way.

They face the awkward moments head-on, find their way back to each other after fights, and apologize; most of all, no one in their dynamic seems to pour more than the other. Despite their black cat x golden retriever dynamic, they meet each other halfway. They both put in the effort to keep the relationship moving and alive.

I think that often, when this dynamic is used in romantic plots, the golden retriever pours more of themselves into the relationship than the black cat in question. Yes, Joo In Ah does need coaxing to get her to open up, but she isn't standoffish or dismissive. She chooses him, talks to him, takes care of him, and shows him that he matters too.
And there was no 3rd act breakup. Hallelujah

📂 Based on their past and upbringing, they work beautifully together.
Someone with her past needed someone like him in her life to bring more light, laughter, and, oddly enough, food into it. He made her life lighter and brighter. I think of her r/ship with the VP as a burden. She was his saviour and anchor. Considering her past, his love would've only weighed her down further down the line.

📂 The Audit Angle of the Show
If you'd have asked me before this drama what audit departments did, I'd have replied with something along the lines of 'maybe cross-checking if the accounts and legal departments are staying on the up and up?' Literally nothing that would interest me in my day-to-day. However, auditing employee relationships? Now that's new. Because I'm lowkey nosy, I think I'd be into that IRL. Gimme all the tea

📂 Our ML's family
While we didn't see much of them, I loved the few times we saw his family. He perfectly embodies the bullied lastborn son in a family of all women. Despite how big he gets, he's still the baby, and they will treat him like one. I loved how they portrayed that older sister, younger brother dynamic. Like I will protect you, but I will also embarrass the ever-loving shit out of you at the drop of a hat. Plus, Joo In Ah got to join this lively family down the line. I think it was great for someone with her background

💌What Could've Been Better/Questions that I'd have Liked Answered💌
📂 I think I'd have liked to learn more about the Team 3 members. Our little Gen Z baby, the girl dating the loser bf for 10 yrs (girl, stand up), and poor mr white blood cell. I was rather curious about them

📂 What happened to Joo In Ah's father's OG family? It is mentioned once that he had a wife and a son. Where did they go? Did they just straight up abandon the man, or? Joo In Ah got saddled with him in the end. What a horrible thing. However, her breaking down after the funeral was one of the most standout parts of the show for me. The acknowledgement of hate mixed with grief. Excellent work.

📂 Our 2nd Leads - Lord, were they frustrating
※JJY - Every time I thought of his life, his misery, the phrase 'msiba wa kujitakia' would pop into my mind. In this colonizer language, this phrase can be translated to mean that I saw his life, the misery that is his life is a self-inflicted tragedy. He frustrated me to no end.

He had the means and opportunity to leave his horrendous family behind. To not accept being a pawn in an arranged marriage for company success. To seek a divorce. To not let the narrow and shallow societal view of his mother's mental illness be a black stain on his life, to not let anyone be ashamed of him and his life.

But what does he do? Sit and passively allow all this to happen. Bro could've taken charge of his life so long ago, but no. Noble idiocy, my friend. Noble idiocy. He does eventually get his head out of the sand and take charge of his life, but it was a little too late in my eyes

※A Jeong - There are so many reasons for me to be mad at this woman. For going after a married man (idc if his marriage was already in tatters and his wife was cheating), for throwing Joo In Ah under the bus, for using Noh Ki-Jun and discarding him TWICE!! for wearing those tiny ass skirts to work (giving a bad name to admin girlies everywhere), for helping throw Heamu into chaos and being instrumental in thousands losing their jobs, for being a two-faced little snake. I could rant and rage at all this, but I won't.

Because all my anger is at the fact that she's (excuse my French) a dumb bitch.

Miss girl is broke, homeless, and in debt. But she's going to risk the job, the roof over her head, debtors to hound her, the ability to buy food because of a dick that wasn't even pointing at her??? Risking your money, your bag for a man that don't even want you??? Christ on a cracker..! I can't. I just can't.

※And then at the end of the show, JJY seemingly forgives her and wants her back because she's apparently good at her job? Is Korea lacking in EAs?? Is there an EA drought in that country? An EA, especially a CEO-level Executive Assistant, needs to be one of the most trustworthy people to a CEO. She betrayed him once, and he still chooses her again? Sir, you are an idiot. I also suspect that that was a way for the show to hint at the possibility of their love story further down the line. I hate that

📂Joo In Ah's Decision Regarding that one Audit File - I don't think we ever got a good explanation why she chose to delete the file. Why did she choose to keep quiet and deflect when they kept hunting and beating her down because of it? Part of me thinks she was holding on to the promise she made to JJY 5 yrs prior. That she'd always protect him. Personally, I don't think she owed him her protection or silence, especially after all the nonsense he'd pulled to her and Noh Ki-Jun since she came back. I also think she should've at least explained her reason(s) to Noh Ki-Jun.

📂Final Thoughts📂
As a whole, the story is great, and the acting is fantastic by everyone involved. While I did find the 2nd leads idiotic, frustrating, and a little cliché, I don't think that's enough reason to miss out on the comedy and romantic development of our leads

Not the best, but still good

You know that thing that kinda annoys you at first, but you find yourself going back? Like it just grates at you, but for whatever reason, you keep going back coz something about it calls to you? That was this show to me. Maybe I'm subconsiously a masochist.

☀️What I Liked🌑
1. The acting - There are parts that I for sure did not like. However, when the gimmicky parts of the plots are drawn back, you get to see just how well these guys act. Especially TeeTee, who plays Duang. When they stop making him play a literal dog, you can see the immediate change in his face and aura.

That man can act. A good example is in the finale, after their conversation with Jamie on the phone, and Qin tells Duang that they can sleep together. You can see the immediate switch on this face. I wish we saw more of that serious/toned-down side of him

Por, his smile is absolutely beautiful. In terms of acting, I think he was OK. I didn't cringe at it. However, it is harder to critique him as his character, Qin, doesn't have that much of an emotional range, meaning Por doesn't use his facial muscles much. Likely since Qin's supposed to be more reserved.

He could do better with his crying scenes, but overall, based on the little we got from what he had to work with, I think it was OK. Hopefully, we get to see him as a more expressive character in the future. I think I'd like that.

As for the wider cast, some were cringe, most were average. No one quite stood out for me.

2. The Production Value - Based on my experiences with Dumondi through 'Khemjira', 'Love Upon a Time', 'Zomvivor', and now 'Duang with You', the company has some incredible people behind their cameras. Their cinematography is top-notch. Up there with (dare I say) a company like BOC. They know what works and what to do with the camera and the lighting.

Lemme gush about lighting for a second, the blue light on Qin in episode 6. Holy shit. I know that scene was supposed to be hot, but that light on him. Oh, it framed him beautifully. The NC scenes in episodes 9 and 12 are also filmed so beautifully. I know the actors have to do their job to sell these scenes to the audience, but the people on the lights and cameras have to be recognized for how well they highlight the actors and their actions in said scenes

3. The chemistry - What I keep thinking is, 'if these characters can give us this much chemistry in a fluffy, college show, what do you think they can do with a more mature, perhaps even darker show?' I think I would spontaneously combust.
PS. I know most people loved their 1st kiss in episode 4. I didn't like it. It wasn't reciprocal enough for me. But the kisses in episodes 9 and 12... That's where it's at. That's where they actually and equally shine

4. The communication - They are surprisingly mature in how they communicate and refuse to let things fester. This show isn't driven by miscommunication, and I love that. And this isn't just with the main characters, even within the wider friend groups. They argue, yes, but take the time to talk things over and fix them.

🚨What I Didn't Like/Could've Been Better🚨

1. It can be overly comedic - This is an ongoing issue for me. Oftentimes, Thai BLs do this kind of humor that doesn't quite land for me. It's over the top, a bit forced, and just so confusing. I remember being thoroughly annoyed by the comedy that I had to note down my feelings after episode 4. Good thing they toned it down as the show proceeded. Or maybe I tuned it out...? IDK. But I think it's the former.

2. Duang's characterization - He is very childish, especially in the 1st half. I think it's meant to be cute, but it comes off as immature, taking you out of the headspace where you're supposed to view him as a potential love interest. And for the love of Christ, why did he have to act like an actual dog for most, if not all, of the 1st half of this?

I think the makers of this show wanted to portray him as this sunshine golden retriever, which, cool, no problem. But why make him mimic an actual dog? Why was he panting on my screen? You can 100% do a golden retriever character without the dog traits. It's been done before. I'm still unsure why they insisted on it.

3. The 2nd couple - With how the streets were excited about the introduction of Marvis, I thought the 2nd couple would have a bigger role to play in the overall story. Only, no, that wasn't to be the case. So much could have been done with a story about 2 playboys falling for each other, but they just let that drown. Then, they only let the combined friend group meet Marvis for 2.5 seconds in the finale. Tsk, tsk.

4. The performances - I mean all the singing and dancing. So during the course of watching this drama, I learnt that the 2 main characters are part of a Tpop band under Domondi. Which could explain why I had to spend about 20+ minutes or so (divided btwn 2 episodes) watching them perform full songs and dance routines.
However, I shouldn't have had to sit through all that. Christina Aguilera and Cher singing and dancing in the 2010 movie 'Burlesque' makes sense coz that is a musical film. Duang with You isn't a musical, so none of that extended singing and dancing made sense to me

5. The situation with Qin's parents - It should've been handled better. The resolution was too quick and too shallow, especially after that long flashback to Qin's childhood. The child actor and the woman who played the nanny should be commended for their acting, though. I was simultaneously heartbroken and pissed off to the high heavens

Would I rewatch this? Absolutely not. I cannot handle a 2nd round of Duang

Is this how sports fans usually feel? I hate it

If the title wasn't clear enough, my faves didn't win.

💪🏾Next time, contestants from all the countries should be chosen fairly. Some countries were very obviously more stacked than others. It's like they were setting some of them up to fail. I mean, I know you have to fill the numbers, but the differences in strength were so glaring

🇹🇭Thailand & 🇵🇭Philippines - I rooted for them since they had black contestants. Namely, James & Robyn. Did I think these teams would win? No. But as Issa Rae said, 'I'm rooting for everybody black. '

PS. I wanna add a note here that representation truly matters - I'm speaking about James. I've been watching Thai BLs for about 3 years now, and in all this time, I've only seen 2 black characters in these shows.
The first time was in 'Triage', and the other time was in 'I Will Knock You'. Seeing James on such a huge show -and killing it btw, heels and all - felt so good. I hope all the black and dark-skinned Thai pple out there saw themselves in him. I mean, I think he's a pretty big deal over there already, but he deserves this, too

💪🏾Australia - I liked them coz they were strong. I've seen pple hating on them, saying they were loud and rude coz of all the cheering and cursing, but to me, they looked like any other Westerners. I'm not a sports person, but they acted like what regular sports pple that I'm exposed to act like. They fumbled really badly in that rope game - I think that they should've replaced Eddie with Katelin. Had they strategized better, I genuinely think they'd have been in the final match. N probably would've won. Also, Dom, my favorite of all the Aussies. I need him to give me just 5% of his positivity

💪🏾Mongolia - Before this, I knew very little about this country and its people. Truthfully, I still don't. However, I started rooting for them after perhaps ep 2(?). They are definitely the opposite of Australia, but that quietness hid such strength. They were reserved and respectful, and so incredibly smart and strong. Their sportsmanship is truly one to be admired. While some teams ( I won't be mentioning names👀) were busy posturing and being rude to other contestants in the name of the game, they largely minded their own and stayed real nice throughout. I hope to see them again in the future. where they'll win. I'm genuinely so sad that they didn't win😭

This was Incredible. I'll Never Do It Again

Let not the rewatch value fool you, I will NEVER rewatch this. Once was simultaneously perfect, but also too much. I cannot handle sitting through this story a second time.

When I saw Netflix add this to the 'coming soon' line-up, I expeditiously added it to 'my list' simply because of Tseng Ching Hua. So far, I've seen him in 5 shows, and he hasn't once let me down with his incredible acting skills. The man is incredibly talented — and the fact that he's beautiful to look at doesn't hurt either.

Moon Lee is also another actor that I wanted to watch. Just coming from binging both seasons of 'The Victim's Game', I wanted to see more of her acting. Who knew that her character, Chiang Hsiao Tung, would rip my heart out the same way that Chiang Hsiao Meng did in the previous shows? Ok, why do her characters have such similar names?
PS. I also just realized that I've seen her before in the movie 'I Am the Secret in Your Heart'. But seeing that I chose to wipe that entire story from my brain —because what the hell was that ending?—, I should be excused for forgetting her.

As for the plot in it's entirity, it's hard for me to write a proper review.

All I know is that my heart felt heavy throughout the 10 episodes. As the other reviews say, this isn't an easy story to get through. I went in thinking that it was a simple run-of-the-mill serial killer plot, and 2 episodes in, I knew I had to pace myself. This wasn't a story I could sit and binge in one or two nights. It took me almost 2 weeks to complete this 1st instalment, as all I could handle in a go was one or two episodes.

I literally finished watching 2 animated movies, one anime, and 2 seasons of 'How to Train Your Dragon' in the time it took me to complete these 10 episodes. I needed some palate cleansers after them.

When my heart wasn't feeling like someone was ripping it out and tap dancing on it, I was angry. Save for Chiang Hsiao Tung and Li Jen Yao, I was angry at everyone. From Li Jen Yao's mother (there's a special place inhell for mothers like her) to his dad (he should've been burned at the stake, to the teachers, the corrupt cops, plus other law enforcers, some of their schoolmates, and the parents of those disgusting boys. Everyone made me angry.

No matter how many times Li Jen Yao tried to save himself from drowning in the mess that was his life, they found ways to keep him down. To push him further in and suffocate him. And then they did the same to Hsiao Meng, all because she fell inlove with someone they deemed less than. Trash that they could bully, play around with, and throw away. Honestly, episodes 8 and 9 hurt in ways that I cannot begin to describe.

All in all, this is an incredibly well-done story, albeit a hard one to get through. The topics highlighted are important, and in a way, I have a deep respect for the actors, screenwriters, directors, and everyone who worked on this story. They did not pull any punches, and my heart and soul are black and blue from it.

PS. Some scenes made me sit and wonder how the actors, especially the two main ones, got into and out of the headspace required to express those emotions. Yoh....🙆🏾‍♀️

Now, I'm off to part 2. A part of me feels like it'll be cathartic, the other part feels like they'll just hurt me more. I feel like they aren't done wringing my heart out just yet

It's Interesting Enough...

IMO, I think anyone asking fans/viewers not to compare this show to the 1st installment is calling for a tall order. You cannot have a predecessor like the OG Only Friends and expect people to scrub it off their minds to watch this. Like it never happened. That makes no sense. Not only do they share a name, but it's set in the same universe, and the OG cast keep popping in. Come on now.

The OG show was also messy, daring, and different. Far from anything we'd seen b4 in the Thai BL space. Of course, it's going to leave a mark that many will remember. Also, I don't expect a show like Only Friends to be relatable. If they were, I'd be seeking therapy and a new friend group, not sitting in my bed on a Friday to watch a TV show. I'm here to be entertained (and lowkey stressed out), not to find something relatable.

🎭Ok, now for my actual thoughts on this show, the couples, & plot.🎭

1. Jack & Dean
Their start was interesting enough. When Dean seduced Jack in the 1st episode, then Mix proceeded to break the 4th wall and stare deep into my soul, I was sat. I was ready for the mess, to learn what this unforgivable thing Dean had done to lead to the breakup, and to hate him. Turns out, I wouldn't hate Dean at all. In fact, I ended up disliking Jack instead.

God forbid, but if I had a partner like Jack... Bruh, I'd walk straight into Nairobi traffic. Just take me out, man. That man is so fucking petulant. Holy shit! When he got punched in ep 10, I stood up and clapped. A whole standing ovation in the living room. He'd had it coming for so long.

Now, I don't think the reason for their breakup was handled very well in this story. They broke up because Jack found out that Dean was side hustling as a host. And so he drank himself into addiction, hated Dean, and spent the rest of the show punishing him coz he could no longer trust him.

I have beef with that. I think that sex work or sex adjacent work should be handled very carefully, especially in this case, where familial circumstances and poverty led Dean to start hosting. And correct me if I'm wrong, but Dean never slept with any of the clients, did he?
He wasn't in love with any of them either. The man was poor, had to support his mother, was dealing with a sister who had an abusive bf, and didn't want to ask for money from his bf because, well, pride is a thing. Plus, moneyXromatic relationships are always a slippery slope.

Based on that, I'll say that the plot tried to be deep, but failed as they mishandled the topics at hand. Dean's poverty and family situation are only used to show that he's maybe untrustworthy, shame him into everyone thinking that he can be bought for sexual favours, and thus, hard to love. Like Jack was trying soo hard to love him. despite it all. Boo hoo, poor Jack *insert hard eye roll🙄*. Come on, man.

I wish that he'd actually cheated. Then all the drama, the name-calling, the mistrust, and the guilt that Jack (and others) kept throwing at and piling on him could make sense.

Side note 1. I need someone from the GMMTV screenwriters' room to sit me down and explain to me how alcoholism works. In the 1st installment, Ray was back to drinking after ditching rehab coz Sand's love and care made him all better. In this one, Jack, who went to rehab for drinking because he was oh so heartbroken, is back to clubbing and drinking with friends with zero repercussions. What...? How..? Fuck the science of addiction, I guess

2. Arnold & Tua
I don't have much to say about them. Friends-to-lovers has never been the genre for me, so I never have much to say about it. There was a lot of yearning and very cute, heartwarming moments with them. Definitely a change of pace from the mess that was the other couples.

I will, however, thank this show for introducing me to the ship that is JossGawin. I hadn't seen Joss b4 and the last time I saw Gawin was in 2023 in 'Be My Favourite.' I enjoyed their chemistry and acting, and cannot wait to see them in the just announced 'Round One.' I've seen parts of the trailer on Twitter, and it looks interesting. A little different. My interest has been piqued. Thank the gods I have a chance to see them in something since 'Replay' was cancelled.

Side note 2: I need to have a serious talk with whoever was in charge of styling Tua for this show. Y'all put Jack in those absolutely delicious fitted crop tops and put that on Tua?? What in the...🙆🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️. What were you trying to accomplish? What was the vision here?

3. Rome & Raffy
Now, if trophies were to be handed out to the couple with the most memorable NC scenes, they'd be taking them home. No questions asked. AouBoom is another new ship that this show introduced me to. Such incredible chemistry and good acting. Outside of their chemistry, their overall storyline was weak, though.

Rome was the good, long-suffering one, while Raffy was out there chasing and appreciating anything and everyone apart from the one person who showed him care. Yes, they got back together, but it felt a little rushed. Rome was really the 2nd option😭. Everyone left, and Raffy had no one, so he picked him. Tsk tsk.

I wanna see their future projects, but I'm weary of the upcoming 'Billionaire Biker.' I watched the trailer, and something about it gave me the vibes of 'A Boss and A Babe,' a show I could not complete. It's one of those GMMTV 'idol dramas', where the ship, their visuals, and their chemistry carry the show on their backs, while the actual plot limps and gasps for breath in the background.

🎭Other Thoughts🎭
a. The cameos from the OG cast were so much fun. I thought Sand & Ray cameos would be my highlight, only for Boston & Nick's conversation to come outta nowhere and take the cup. That was perhaps the best conversation in this whole installment. So heartfelt

b. Speaking of Boston, they used that man as bait. Had me all stressed out, only for him to work to push the couples together. Zero mess from him *sigh*. And then he had the most random 'come to Jesus' moment outta nowhere

c. What happened to the 100k that Pete stole? Yeah, he got exposed for the scheming, thieving, lying little shit that he was, but did he give back the money?

d. I wish they hadn't quickly dropped with that on-screen ship vs r/ship side plot that they started with DeanxArnoldxJack. I think that could have made a very interesting social commentary on the behind-the-scenes lives in the BL (and more recently GL) world

e. How did poor boy Dean end up in a high-rise with floor-to-ceiling windows? Did the pple behind the story forget that bro was poor? Or does rent in Thailand work differently than where I'm from?

f. Dean & Raffy's catty cutting fights were so fun to watch. Raffy was certainly in over his head trying to take on Dean.

g. Not enough 'cross kissing' for my liking

h. We saw Great in the 2nd-to-last scene. Does that mean we'll be getting a 3rd installment? If so, please, please bring back the mess - and tighten the plot

🎭Final Remarks🎭
Overall, the show is good. You can watch it, but perhaps lower your expectations on the messiness. It's nowhere near the levels of greatness set by its predecessor. The actors were good. The plot wasn't. It played it too safe and left many glaring plot holes.

*taps chin contemplatively* Hmmmm...

This is yet another show that took over my Twitter feed for weeks and has (as of now) very high ratings, but I just seem to be on the other side of the majority.

👻Let's start with the good👻

1. Arthit's r/ship with Direk - If there's one thing that Thai BLs will give you, it's a shitty dad. They are a dime a dozen. Out here, like they are trying to win 'worst BL dad of the genre' or something. That's why it was so refreshing to see how healthy and utterly unserious the relationship between this father and son was. Please, can we get more of this? I'm tired of all the a-holes.

2. This gave me 'Semantic Error' vibes in a couple of ways
a. Daotok reminds me of Chu Sang U. He is very robotic, especially in those beginning episodes. He seems to have a bit of a hard time peopling and a harder one understanding Arthit

b. How Arthit pursues Daotok. He lowkey basically annoys him into liking him. Which is what Jae Yeong did to bag Sang U. It wasn't on the same level, of course, but Arthit took a page from Jae Yeong's book. I like this version of pursuing what is basically a spicy street cat in human form. You have to be willing to annoy them and push boundaries (knowing that it will earn you some scratches) if you want them to notice and keep noticing you.

3. The relationship development in episodes 4-6 - This is where their relationship, the slowburn as it is, shines the best.

4. That NC scene - Who directed that shit? And can we have them coordinate more scenes in the future? Coz Holy Shit... Lemme not say more on this very public platform.

5. Solid friend groups for both characters

👻What Could've Been Done Better👻

1. The 1st 3 episodes - The pacing is off, and overall, doesn't add much to the plot or the overall plot. Perhaps, you could argue that it helps introduce us to Daotok's powers and helps with forced proximity between the characters. I'll agree with you that it's true.
But the fact that each episode is about an hour long, and we don't really get to see much of Daotok's power after ep 3 (I think), and the girl from jail ups and disappears until she's needed for some sleuthing later, it overall feels like a waste of time.
Maybe they didn't have enough material to fill 8 episodes and chose to drag this out. Or maybe they did, but chose the wrong thing. IDK, I haven't read the novel.

2. Arthit's behaviour in that living room scene in Ep 6 - I have no idea where that behaviour change came from. He'd been such a respectful green flag in the r/ship, then all over sudden.... TF? That kiss and the reasoning behind it weren't it. It reminded me of those Korean manhwas that start so healthy, genuine, and respectful, then, for some unknown hellish reason, the author decides that s*xual assault is what the story needs. Their makeup after that was really cute, but I'm sure they could have done quite literally anything else to bring them closer. Not this predatory act

3. Ep 7 & 8 - More pacing issues. And the absurdity of the choice to include a random shooting? It reminded me of those useless 3rd act break-up scenes. Where the author or screenwriter is like, 'Ah, they are doing too good and too happy right now. Let's include some drama.' And now, as the reader/viewer, I'm stuck wondering where all the unnecessary drama came from.
The shooting incident didn't even add anything to any relationship. Daotok had already accepted being with Arthit. He didn't need this random occurrence to make him 'realize' his feelings for the man, or whatever point they were trying to make

Overall, I'd say that this is fine. While the pair is cute together (I really enjoyed how cute n needy Arthit became once he started pursuing Dao), the overarching story itself leaves much to be desired. What had the potential to be good is ruined by pacing issues and side quests that could have been done and over within 2 episodes, tops.

Random (unrelated) thoughts
i. I could not help but wow at how beautifully their skintones contrasted. Generally, BLs love that (slightly) tan topXpale bottom thing. I usually notice it as like a footnote in my head, but it doesn't stand out to me. Maybe this time it stood out coz of how deeply(?) tan Ngern is. I pray that that man never touches skin-lightening products

ii. If Ngern and Joss Way-ar ever took a gym pic together while flexing those biceps, shoulders, and thighs, I would potentially, spontaneously combust. May the gyms in Thailand remain open, and may these two never stop going

Goddammit! They made me (sit through &) enjoy fluff

I go into every fluffy drama with a dramatic side eye. IDK what it is about them, but more often than not, the acting is usually average at best, the comedy is overdone (or doesn't land), the pacing is horrendous, or the story is overly simplistic or nonsensical. And if I'm particularly unlucky, I am assaulted with the deadly combination of 3 or all the above factors.

If you cannot tell, I do not generally enjoy fluff shows - I mean, my favourite BL stories include "My Beautiful Man", "Love Mechanics", "My Stand-In", "The End of the World with You", "KinnPorsche", "Moonlight Chicken", and most recently "Revenged Love". Clearly, I have a flair for the dramatic. I like a complicated story with characters who live in the grey areas of life, rather than in clear-cut blacks and whites. Fluff doesn't cut it in my house. Which is why my enjoyment of this drama comes as such a surprise to me.

Despite liking FirstKhao's acting chops, I was convinced I'd hate it. But week after week, I found myself coming back. The plot is simple but not nonsensical. It has heart, specifically in regards to Khaotung's character dealing with his mom's death (the guilt and regrets surrounding that), the aftermath and picking up the pieces, as well as learning to open himself up to love. The comedy also wasn't overdone. All in all, it was a good, low-stress way to pass the time on a Tuesday night.

Now, would I rewatch this? Honestly, no. Just because I like FirstKhao as an acting ship doesn't suddenly make me a changed woman. I am set in my ways. I am more likely to rewatch their scenes in Only Friends or The Heart Killers than I am this. I think I was able to enjoy this as much as I did because I only had to watch one episode a week. Everything was spaced out. If I had to binge it, I'd have likely dropped it. Or it'd have taken me a lot longer to complete it. But for those who love fluffy shows and like this ship, yeah, I believe your rewatch value/likelihood will be much higher than mine

PS. High school BLs (with age-appropriate actors) are the only exception to my dramatic side eye. They are 1000% allowed to be fluffy and cute. I will eat the shit up every time.

Tries to be realistic, passes in some parts but fails in others

The Wins
1. I think their attempt to highlight the harm caused by obsessive fans is great. As someone who's been in the K-pop space for about 4 years now, I'm genuinely shocked and scared every time I see just how much people are invested in idol off screen lives. Actually, even their onscreen lives too.

2. The burden of being a celebrity in an image-obsessed society. At some point in the earlier episodes, it is pointed out that Laik is a brand, not a person. He's only allowed to be one way and can never be human. That's honestly such a sad existence.

3. The murder mystery aspect - This is like half a win. It was really interesting in those 1st 6/7 episodes. I was hella invested in the whodunnit of it all. However, somewhere around the 7th/8th episodes, everything went downhill. The plot stalled and started going round and round in circles with no end in sight. We also veered off, paying more attention to the romance, rather than the fact that a high-profile celebrity is accused of murdering his equally high-profile bandmate.

4. The reveal - They win on who the murderer was. I would not have guessed it

The Misses
1. Se Na - I think making her his fan was the wrong thing to do. I feel like it contradicts the initial message they were trying to make, especially with those fans who broke into his house and somehow found his number. If the point of the show was to stop fan delusion, they failed when they made his fan 'win' by having him fall in love with her.

IMO, it perpetuates the delusion that 'if only I get to meet my idol, then he'd fall for me', which is harmful for the levels of delusion seen in such fandoms. I think it'd have been best had she not been a fan of him at the beginning, but had become one in the process. Or if she were to remain a fan, she'd have been a more casual one, and he shouldn't have been her main bias.

2. The legal perspective - I speak on this as someone with a legal background. Her unshakeable belief in him was utterly unbelievable. It is human to be doubtful. Hell we are faced with doubt in relation to those closest to us (family & friends), how can you be so trusting of a celebrity? Just coz you are his fan and he saved you once way back when?

Again, the show worked hard to show us that fans don't really know what goes on behind the scenes of celebrity lives. We can speculate, choose sides when information is lacking, even when some information is revealed. But at the end of the day, we still don't know these people. This messaging is unfortunately undermined by the whole 'I'm his fan, I even met him once by chance, so clearly I know him. He'd never do that', undertone of the plot/romantic situation.

Also, lawyering is a job. You don't always trust your client. Sometimes you do, but as the case goes on or as more facts come to light, doubt can set in. That whole thing of 'I'll only pick a lawyer who 100% believes in my innocence' is dumb. And a privilege not afforded to many IRL. Heck, if lawyers only worked with people they wholeheartedly believed, the whole industry would collapse. And if accused persons only looked for legal representatives who believed in them 100%...., Bruh, everybody's going to jail.

3. Her dad's case - Why set up her background, show us the very reasons she is who she is today, the reason why she (partly) chooses to represent Laik only for you to not show us what happened with the dad's case?

Final Thoughts
a. Had they not sacrificed the idol life reality plot for the romance, I think this story would've been more impactful. But maybe they were afraid of the netizens and didn't wanna ruffle too many feathers.

b. They propped up the prosecutor in the beginning, but didn't use him to the fullest. His whole story of 'former high school bully turning a new leaf and leaving his terrible/corrupt father's shadow' would have been interesting to watch if further explored.

c. I don't think this was the intention of anyone in that writer's room, but I finally grasp (really well at that) why some idols have said that they wouldn't want to date their fans. Like, I always had an idea why, but watching this had me sitting on my couch and nodding like 'aaaah, I see it now. It makes so much sense!'
