Her father also doesn't blindly side with his concubine, he doesn't love or care much about her. He actually treats FL's mother better because she's his main wife. He also treats FL and her sister better than his concubine-born daughter. Actually, FL's father is quite unique character. I've never seen father figure like him in any novel I've read so far. He's mostly a weirdo who cares only about his interests - calligraphy and painting. He treats FL and her mother and sister better because, in his prospect, legitimate wife and her children must be treated with this much care and proper respect. Yet he's not doting and devoted husband and father, not stepping in "women affairs" on anyone's side. At the same time, he doesn't see the need to pay much attention to his concubine and her children. He just treats his son there a bit better because it's son. Yet again, not much care or love there. He's not doting but also not cruel. Just distant father. He only cares for FL a bit more because she takes after him and shares his interests and is also very talented painter.
