IMO the drama was one long trigger. I had to stop for a bit because I got so distressed.

I remember a hospice nurse related that this happens when you're dying- seeing marvellous, joyous scenes.. So I figured he was dying and that he's dead.

I wondered if it was an open ending! I do love, love love, your take on it!

I just finished it. I'm feeling pretty shattered.

1. The wrong person died.
2. Zhang Linghe was phenomenal. He carried the entire drama. He was the heart and soul of it, like a shooting star.
3. It was a mess till the end. Disjointed. The directing was godawful with hints of sanity.
4. The one stunning bit of cinematography was Li Boze and Qingyi ’s meeting for the last time bathed in complete blackness., illuminated in golden light. Yow! Hello? Where was this quality before?
5. Elsewhere a couple of weeks ago, I compared Murong Qingyi to a great tragic Shakespearean figure, an honourable character with a fatal flaw that leads to his ruin-Susu. I rescind that idea of a fatal flaw, and now describe him as an operatic Shakespearean figure tragic in life with a tragic ending. Deserving of so much more. He was so full of love. I’m heartbroken.
6. His reunion with Susu did nothing for me, I was not moved by it but I was profoundly moved by his joy and happiness to have her back and to have a complete family. More scenes with Le’an would have made me happy but then it would be POJ. :)
7. On a shallow note, Zhang Linghe looked stunning while dying and pulverising my heart (finally photographed properly).
8. If this is a typical Republican drama I’m never watching another one again. I’ll leave them to the masochists.
9. Would I recommend this to my friends?.Nope. Unless they are trauma junkies or Zhang Linghe fans (with a trigger warning.).
10. After Ep 27 I was going to rate it as a 6 down from 7 (it could have been great). I’m keeping it at a 6 because of the acting. The acting was everything! Special mention to Qingyi’s Mama who chewed the scenery spectacularly, and to Wang Churan for making me hate Susu with a furious passion, wanting her dead, and would have been happy to kick her to make sure, till the very end.
11. I won’t watch it again. If I get nostalgic I’ll watch my favourite bits with Zhang Linghe.

Meanwhile, I. Am . Not. Going. To . Cry. It feels like a death in the family.

Just because it's a soap opera doesn't mean it's a good soap opera. Overdo is not a good, well-crafted soap opera.

Just finished ep 27 and boy is the show dragging. We're getting more of the same.The staging is static, and the dialogue is loosey goosey and boring. Qingyi is being a giant loon who's lost the plot, and Susu the Weepy doesn't move a muscle like usual (but there are tears!). Now, the duelling duo are sleuthing like a fashionable married couple, not a hair out of place! The pacing is so twisted and awkward there is no rhythm or direction to it. I'm getting whiplash.

I don't know how I will endure the final binge tomorrow. I'm hoping Susu makes the ultimate sacrifice with a heroic death and puts me out of my misery. And Qingyi's.

But I'm getting the feeling that there will be a HE and that would really make it all a sick joke. I dread it. I also think I'm going a little crazy.

The only warm fuzzies we’ve ever gotten is the relationship between Murong Qingyi and Le’an. True love.

There’s a lot of presumption here without the statics to prove it. Do you have an argument that doesn’t make a comparison to POJ and its actor and ascribe ignorance to a section of the audience?

That's one thing I love about c-dramas. I find a lot of them far more substantial, thoughtful and intelligent than most western dramas, not to mention some acting is quite profound. They are many layered and can inspire self-reflection. It's happened to me as well.

The incoherence and lack of logic has been making me crazy! As are the flat, overly bright lighting, filters and relentless closeups taking away from everyone's humanity and expressions. I finally concede, it's more like a soap opera. With paper dolls. These are gorgeous actors and the cinematography actually made them less appealing.

Agreed that the leads have no chemistry even though I like both actors. She's cold and cries a lot, and neither shows longing in their eyes, especially Qingyi. I do see a lot of suspicion though. It might partially be the fault of the director.
I really loved the actress who played the mother in her scenes with Qingyi. Both the stabbing and the drunkenness. Fire.
