This. Idk why people are expecting the same emotions that were put through the grinder and broken down over the years. They really don't understand what war and loss does to a person who cherished life and love above all else and it shows. As far as he's concerned, he's still on the battlefield with the guillotine over his head. He can't be the same way he was before because he longer sees the same world he did before. Doesn't matter if the content remain unchanged when the container has changed.
