Watch this one!! Cast of good actors playing charming characters. Nice camera work and costumes/make-up. A script that doesn't drag or make any character too smart or too stupid (plus great dialogue!?!)

Based on the poster, I was bracing for Yang Ze to be shunted to supporting for this one. But no, he is mostly front and center (with a fun character prone to emotional manipulation🥲) And I still enjoyed watching the other characters when they did take over.
Loved this show!! I have never felt 54: episodes fly by so quickly I was so invested. This show has interesting things to say and is populated by loads of great characters.
The one weakness was Sima Yi - thought he was poorly acted, his love story felt rushed/jumpy/unearned (their scenes together eventually became the only bits I ff'd thru), and particularly in the later half his character felt all over the place.
Really enjoyed the first act of this and Furong and his sister are the best I love them, but by episode 31 I am getting a bit bored. The emotional moments just feel so.... modulated. Like many stoic detached characters, I suspect Xingzhi feels more dynamic on page than is possible to portray on screen (as much as I do appreciate the warmth and sense of humor the actor gives him). The two main characters are memorable and I like their vibe, but it is all just... not very exciting ?
Just saw that Zhao Yuan Yuan is on the cast list for this. I LOVED her as the crazy bananas dowager empress in Shadow Love. Does she get to do anything fun/interesting in this latest role or should I give it a pass?
The styling in that poster reminds me a lot of Ashes to Crown. I adored the male character styling in that show and would be over the moon to see something similar for this. 🙏🙏

Agreed. At first I thought the twist was dumb but ended up loving how it recontextualized the emotional truths of the different characters. Unique and memorable storytelling, but ultimately flawed. I don't think I could stand to rewatch it - there was a lot of narrative bulk about "let's understand and appreciate the elderly" and side stories that felt unnecessary with later context. Wish they had kept it more focused on the main family melodrama.
Decent premise but there were so many neverending dialogue scenes that just repeated the info you already knew over and over. They could have fit a lot more plot in this if someone had bothered to edit the script. Even the role reversal stuff was bland. I got bored.
Great final line! Some similar character dynamics to love beyond the grave, but I preferred the softer, scholarly vibes of this one a bit more. Instead of obsessed ghosts and generals, this one is divine trees and local government.

Interesting. When you take a green flag character and you squeeze him so hard a bunch of red flags pop out of him but when you stop squeezing they all retract below the surface leaving a pure cinnamon roll again. Is there a better name for that trope? A stress ball red flag? Always amusing.
BEST actress in the short drama department, she should get much better roles I love her 😂❤️
