The more he tries to change to the future the more it seems the timeline is already set. For instance, when he tried to save his mom's restaurant but was surprised when she died. Either it happened earlier than last time or no matter what he does the timeline will remain set

pertaining his mom's death, I'm wondering if it happened earlier this time bc he seemed really surprised when it happened. Or could it be a case where its as you said he thought if he solves that problem then his mom would've lived
