Ming Yan thought process goes out the window when it meets an order from an elder in his sect. It is actually in keeping with the story trend. This is why I preferred Xuanji in her sect because you could never convince her to do something that she doesn't believe in or that she knows is wrong.
A thing to remember is that just because the sects call themselves righteous doesn't mean they dont do bad things too and that likewise just because there are demons doesn't make them all evil.
