haha because he is very intelligent, strategic, and deeply involved in the same business world as xiaolan in the novel especially in hong kong investments and real estate. while zhou cheng is loyal and supportive but lives mostly in the military world and is more straightforward so some readers feel he doesn’t fully share xiaolan's fast-growing business life. you can see in douyin, weibo and xiaohongshu how popular du zhaohui is compared to zhou cheng among readers. so it’s nice that the screenwriters made some changes to zhou cheng for the drama.

in the novel, du zhaohui remains unmarried his entire life for xiaolan. in his own words, he isn’t staying faithful for anyone—he simply wants the best and having seen what the best is like, he can no longer look at anyone else. later, he has a son and daughter via IVF. he dotes on his daughter and wants to return his son 🤣

that’s why this feels like a good adaptation. in the novel, xiaolan spends much of her time dealing with business ventures and zhou cheng rarely participates in that world to the point that the main storyline could easily go on without him. i’m not even going to get into how absurdly he handled the issues with his dead comrade’s family and his childhood sweetheart. in the drama, however, zhou cheng feels much better integrated into the story. you could say he’s intellectually matched with xiaolan and making him a lawyer allows him to support her in her business ventures. because of that, we also get a more genuine and balanced romance storyline between them.

"too much extra stuff” in fact, the screenwriters and author made some good changes to the male lead in the drama and even added scenes for him but not so much that he overshadows the female lead. many novel readers actually prefer du zhaohui over zhou cheng. zhou cheng is basically a green flag male lead now with the change.

no, i haven’t. i’m not really watching costume idol dramas at the moment, mostly reality shows and japanese dramas. but from the reviews i've read, it seems the female lead was also downplayed (compared to the novel) to highlight the male lead in the drama.

this is such a good read and we really need more screenwriters like this in the c-ent industry. in many chinese dramas (mainly idol dramas), especially nowadays, female leads are often deliberately weakened just to highlight the male leads. their abilities, intelligence, or independence get toned down so the male protagonist can appear more capable or heroic. it’s even more frustrating when the drama is supposed to center on a strong female lead. in comparison, korean and japanese dramas don’t seem to rely on this trope as much, female characters there are often allowed to be competent, flawed, ambitious, and complex without being diminished for the sake of the male lead. that’s why this drama feels refreshing—not just xiaolan, but even the other female characters are written with depth and agency. it’s probably also helped by the fact that it’s a lower-budget production which may mean there’s less interference from higher-ups, allowing the writers to stay true to the story and the characters.

yeah haha at least we get some suspense which is usually taken away if we already know the novel. i'm hoping for a sci-fi twist 🙏

zxw did play the guy at the amusement park, there's a vlog about it. but it’s also possible that he was just used as a free stand-in to save costs.

in the novel, xiaolan never went back in the original timeline so what happens next in the drama is a mystery to everyone except the drama team haha

no matter how focused i am while watching this drama, i still miss details like this—especially with my attention split between the subtitles. thankful for drama fans with such sharp eyes 😎

i also think that's a good thing. every role an actor takes matters in the long run and it’s very easy to get typecast. marketing accounts may criticize actors for having long gaps between projects but quality should always matter more than quantity, especially now that the industry is going through a slump. if someone truly wants to build a lasting reputation as an actor, careful role selection is crucial. zy is still young yet she already seems inclined toward non-idol and more serious dramas which will make it easier for her to transition later on. idol dramas may bring quick social media attention and followers but building a diverse portfolio of strong mainstream roles creates a much stronger foundation for a long-term career. this also takes into account that she balances both film and drama.

her company has always seemed weak when it comes to marketing and maybe even long-term planning which is especially important right now, even when it comes to defending their artists. but it might also be zy's own choice. she doesn’t seem interested in chasing the traffic route and instead takes her time choosing scripts and preparing for roles. when people talk about the 95 🌸 actresses, she’s often brought up mainly because of her looks, even though she actually has one of the most major film award nominations among them (along with gxt who is also taking a slightly different path). after hello 1983 though, even with its only average buzz, people are starting to recognize her acting again instead of just praising her appearance.

she could’ve gone on with her life after her plastic surgery but she’s just so fixated on xiaolan 🙃

she started by selling duck eggs (though not for long) then moved on to selling oil cakes (there was a scene where she carefully calculated her earnings from it). once she had enough capital, she began selling clothes which had higher profits, reinvesting the money to buy more inventory. later, she rented a space and turned her clothing sales into a proper boutique-style store which became the foundation of her capital. eventually, she went to college while her aunt managed the boutique. her business continued to grow and she slowly built up the capital for her later ventures while studying.
