That's exactly it. Because SDM isn't clear with HJP about her obsession with NDS, HJP still feels he has hope. She's stringing him along as her spare tire.

What I don't like is how the writer spends 5-6 episodes fleshing out this complex and amazing character in HJP, only to deconstruct and simplify his complexity.
As of now, HJP has been relegated to your typical villain trying to stop the power of true love, blah blah blah...

They are showing that HJP is the aggressor and NDS is the innocent lamb. It's a clear literary portrayal of good vs evil.
In the time skip, they have shown NDS growing, which was expected, but we didn't expect that they would let HJP not only devolve, but also become petty and jealous.
Actual mountains that people can see, then the emotions make sense. Fake mountains, artificially placed there, audience will not empathize with.
Ep. 13 seemed like a new drama completely, there is so much disconnect from the previous 12 episodes, it may as well have a new title.

Nothing wrong with liking the character we support. If it really makes you bothered, you can start blocking some of the comments.
And I love the reference to the Han River view apartment. It's a clear dig at HJP.
So it takes SST boys three years to outdo what took HJP at least 15-20 years to achieve.
