I actually think that the plot is written for convenience. For example, the ML did not already confirm who the second SQZ really was because he conveniently overheard her maid explain to his bodyguard that SQZ was trying hard to emulate YCW. For me, it still a little illogical because for someone who's so intelligent, intuitive and usually observant, it still seemed too easy for him to just accept that explanation.
The other friends may know her better as an adult but it didn't take much convincing for them either. Bai Xiao Sheng barely questioned anything. On the other hand, the way Jiang Gr realized it made more sense.

As for her, she does still have feelings for him. She was close to confessing to him until she overheard his bodyguard say that he and the Pan family deserved to have a peaceful life after all that happened and that he should head home to the capital and marry the princess. So she is doing the whole noble idiocy thing and giving him up for his own good.

So at least for now, the implication is that he was killed by them and they were also the ones who killed fake YCW. I think you're right, the plot will tie back to the imperial court and the setting will move to the capital for a bit. I don't think the "Princess" in the ML's life is the real princess. It seems too cliched to have the ML's wife killed out of jealousy but who knows...

You may be right about him not being on a mission at first since I think his main motivation for being sent back to Heyang was to investigate the death of YCW. But how did he get out of trouble with the palace after he was charged with the crime of coercion and forced marriage? He must have exchanged his freedom for something in return.

We are only 1/4 way into the show, and the villains have been revealed. Still, I wonder if there is an even higher mastermind villain driving the evil sect. I also think that the "Princess" that has been corresponding with PY is not really the princess.
