I don't understand what HS has done to trick LH . I got the part that KJP guessed his route.

So HS took the book from the temple,let LH follow him afterward, stop the car in front of a church and disappeared. Then LH assumed the codebook wasn't at the church. KJP then took the codebook from the church. I am not sure about the order of these.
