I just finished this 2 days ago so it's good to see your review.
I haven't seen other portrayals of Zhan Zhao besides Kenny Ho which is the gold standard. I guess in the initial arc, Yang Yang didn't really act like an inteligent Zhan Zhao but he improved from the middle part onward. I think it respects the audience's intelligence a bit too much as I wasn't clear what was the reason of the people at Wang Xian Village and all the other youngsters have black teeth and damaged ribs. What was the cause? I guess it was because they were used to taste a poison, not so sure about the broken ribs, did they throw stone to kill those victims? Also who shot the arrow in the finale? It's either Bai Yu Tang or Zhan Zhao activated the trigger mechanism.
Overall, like you I also enjoyed the show because it's classic wuxia with a mix of mystery and camaraderie between the three which is the strongest part. Some parts were indeed dragging especially the middle part with the Jin family.
Have you watched The Ancient Detective? It has romance but not the focus.Mysterious Lotus Casebook which is a…
No worries.
Yes, I also love detective shows, so I'm watching or have watched the shows you mentioned above. Unfortunately there is no much ancient detective show with no romance.
I only watch some of the episodes but I know most of the story from my mom.
I also love her mom's character and the teacher. I felt very bad about the teacher but luckily they rescued her so at least the dumb cops have some use. I also felt so bad at He Yu Qiong's ending and I saw your comments about it. That's so cruel.
Thanks for your response. I think Judge Bao was very popular in South East Asia so a lot of people were familiar with Kenny Ho's version.
Ah, mercury poisoning makes sense. How about the cracked ribs? Did they stone the villagers to silenced them?
True about ZZ's hand being full. It makes sense that they didn't show the killing.

I like this genre but for heavy political intrigue, need to wait when not so busy with work first.

I was hoping Zhan Zhao was real which is sort of like a Chinese superhero,
Ah I see. I guess that's too goo too be true that all characters in Judge Bao series are real.
Thanks.
Is Zhan Zhao fictional? He is always linked to Judge Bao but some people say he is a legend, not a real person.
Then I find the Wiki page

I was hoping he was real :)
But I love this series.
