I think it was set up that way so that the last person he spoke to was Yang Ying, which was for me was a big emotional sob moment. Their little side romance was sweet but unfulfilled. 😭

Yup sadly felt like they threw out smart in the latest two episodes with the marquis. Fingers crossed they remember that he's not just a love-sick fool.
Ning is having to face the fact that unlike a traditional woman, Ruyi isn't just going to follow his lead and do what he wants to do simply cause she likes him. It's so refreshing that they spoke about this in such an open, calm, and rational conversation.

True, but I just wish the writer didn't make him out to be a complete romantic fool in the latest episodes. Seems all reason just flew out the window and was ascribed to his love for Ruyi.
Also it's not just sentimental attachment or faith alone that makes Ruyi so unwary of him. I think she has regrets for how they parted and how as a shifu she was really harsh on him compared to Yang Ying. To me it seems like LTG is unfinished business that she didn't realise she had, until she was faced with him again.

Maybe... I don't want to get any of my hopes up, but also currently I am just glad that Yang Ying has someone in her life like Yuan Lu, irrespective of whether they get together or not. Yu Shi San is like the fairy godfather, flittering around giving well-meaning 'advice'

Agreed and it's also such a disservice to the character of LTG that they were building up as cunning, ruthless, and calculative. I felt this whole trope that was playing out in 17 and 18 was sudden and rather distasteful, especially that last bit with his obsession turning into possessiveness. He was such an interesting character when he didn't care about using others and was focused on gaining power. I felt he could have been built up into such an interesting frenemy. I found it so jarring to see him go from calm and focused to this sudden idiot making the most basic mistakes of wearing his emotions on his face. Like he's basically advertising his weaknesses for all to see, you would think that after he has spent so many years living under the emperor's watchfulness that he would be more cautious. At the same time, he does a lot of stupid moves in the episodes that endanger Ruyi and the scriptwriter just attribute this to his obsessive love. It's like they threw out all the years of growth and experiences that shaped and changed him, after her supposed death, while An.I am not looking forward to this line of character development and sadly due to the end of ep 18, I doubt this whole subplot is going to go away anytime soon before the end. :(

I agree the conversation is an excellent development. On one hand it highlights how Ruyi is finally starting to not simply live as the Empress told her too, but instead is starting to want to live for herself and her own ideals. On the other hand, Ning is suddenly having to face the fact that the woman he's fallen for isn't just going to follow his lead/wishes in retire to the countryside as he has been planning to with Yuan Lu at the start. The shifting priorities and what they both hope for their futures, seem to be diverging, but I think the fact that they have both left the conversion open at the end to think about things is good. This is the kind of conversation that an equal and respective partnership can be built upon as it gives both parties room to compromise and change, if they wish to maintain their relationship.

Because they're both assassins, she knows that him telling her is a big deal as that means he trusts her enough to share his weakness with her. Finger crossed they don't mess this show up!

Ning Er's sister was once saved by the prince and the prince fell for her without having seen her face. Ning Er essentially pretends to be her sister and take her place as the princes love, thus Miss Sue losses the empress position to Ning Er

I feel like the actor and actress did a great job of showing that thin line between love and hate that was such a huge characteristic of their entire relationship. It was their interactions and the storyline that just made the drama for me such a compelling watch.

Oh good! Yeah I found it almost laughable the second time he confesses his love to her in the palace before he got his memories back. I was like what... when did you fall for her again cause everything before this shows you to be a complete ass to her. The show definitely didn't give me a convincing moment throughout their time in the palace to show him falling in love with her again. Also in that scene the fl has already regained all her memories and is planning to run away back to her country so lol he totally missed the mark with her.

Very true, the ml in goodbye, my princess, had a horribly toxic relationship with the fl. I'm not justifying his actions at all, but not sure if this was shown in the television version. Part of the reason he orchestrates the death of her family, isn't just to gain his father's favour to become the crown prince. It's also so that he can gain justice and revenge for his mother's death and the death of her family, which is why the sml, his cousin, helps him behind the scenes. It's interesting though as at the very start for a little bit you see the ml isn't an individual in character who seeks power as he is only interested in being a lazy prince. It's only till after he finds out about the reason (the horrible emperor) for his older brother's death and the death of his mother and her family that he sets out to do what he does. Unfortunately in his fight for power to defeat the emperor, he himself becomes too much like his father to deserve happiness.
I also like how the fl doesn't shrike from her duty though as a princess and til the end is willing to give up everything for her country and people, just to stop the ml's power hungriness. It's poetic justice when the ml gets his memories back, to only lose her all over again in the most final way and by her own hand as she chooses to die for country, family, and love.

Good choice!! One minute later the ML's puckering his lips up for a kiss like a 4 year old and the next minute after that the FL's personal maid is like "oh I know the prince has done all these horrible things to use, but he's treating us so well and sending us so many pretty baubles, maybe you should forgive him"🤯 I'm sorry but they're going to romanticise this! 💀 I'm done.
I finished watching Goodbye my princess and personally I liked it. The Director's cut version, which is like 2-3 episodes longer, is better than the television version. The ML and SML, as well as the FL, I feel were much more well written and the storyline of the romance was more genuine than this trainwreck palace drama. I mean at least the ML and FL actual fell in love with each other before they got amnesia and everything went to hell 😂

Lol and LBY isn't even that good at bearing grudges or getting his revenge. 😂 He's such a useless weak in character man. I don't know what LQL ever saw in him.

He originally wanted to make her his father's concubine and use her as his inside woman, because she looks like his father's dead wife (the second prince's mother). But because of what happened during the selection ceremony with the other girls' faces being harmed by acid or poisoned water, that meant his father could no longer make the FL his concubine. The poisoned water is probably being investigated but since it's not central to the plot it basically disappears after the event. He made her his concubine to ensure that he could gain and keep his father's favour. The ML basically does everything to ensure that he will be chosen as his father's successor. He doesn't care about her liking someone else. He just cares about gaining his father's favour. In the process, of doing this he just 'conveniently' 🙄 falls for her (cough cough more like becomes obsessed with owning her 😒). Problem is I'm not seeing anything that will redeem his action or reason as to why she should fall for him other than the aged old reasoning of 'it's her lot as a woman and she should just accept her fate'. I cannot under any circumstances understand how she could fall for her rapist!🤮 Like the precious cloak gift and the whole horrible childhood is suppose to justify and allow us to understand what makes the ML tick and forgive him. 🤢 I don't think so!!
Also I don't think it is an editing issue that's causing all these problems, although it's true the storyline between the two suffers a lot from the cuts, which doesn't help to establish their romantic relationship at all. Everything that I've seen, that I haven't fast forward through lol, does not give me any confidence or good feeling towards the romance between the FL and ML. The ML has done so many horrible things to the FL and the SML in the name of political power. 'The ends justify the means' best exemplifies how the ML thinks. He's definitely a huge morally grey character, problem is I don't think the actor's performance is charming or charismatic enough to keep me intrigued for the remaining half of this show. I'm currently paused on the scene in ep 15 of the forced hug the ML gives to the FL, trying to make her reconsider staying alive and keeping the child. All I feel is AWKWARD, watching him be all nice and lovey dovey, while she's obviously still dealing with the emotional fallout of him raping her...🤦🤦🤦 I'm debating about finishing as well, especially after what I've read in recaps.

賤籍 (Jian ji) is the lowest social class in Ancient China, below that of even the ordinary people, and the modern equivalent that still exist today would be the untouchables (Dalit) in India. The class often encompassed slaves, servants, prostitutes, and entertainers. The latter two category sometimes were made up of the wives and daughters of officials that had displeased or rebelled against the emperor (which is what you see happen in the drama Dream of Splendor). Due to the stringent laws placed upon the jian ji, they were not allowed to marry into a class above them or take the imperial exams, etc. In the case of prostitutes and entertainers, these law essentially made them lower class citizens with little to no rights, often little better than slaves. Unlike slaves though the servants, prostitutes, and entertainers would have had contracts establishing their term as a Jian ji (for example it could be only 3 years, until they paid off their debts, or for life that they would be Jian ji). It's probably translated as social pariah because the Jian ji faced a lot of social discrimination. This class was officially abolished during Yongzheng's reign. Hope this helps!

yup completely agree and honestly I feel like it just gets worse as the ML falls for her and forces his feelings on her (ie he rapes her off screen). he's so toxic that I find it hard to see any redeeming qualities.

Am I the only one who thought Changheng finally get's his chance to win Xiaolanhua lol? Just saw the casting and am excited as I really like Zhang Ling He's work. Not sure about Yu Shu Xin as I feel like it's hit and miss for me with her shows. Fingers crossed this is interesting.
