They whitewashed TTJ a lot from the novel but they never made conforming changes to the way Susu reacts to him.…
It makes sense. I have been reading the books and some of the stuff TTJ does is truly horrific. In hindsight it seems so obvious how lazy these writers were.
Yes Bai Lu's acting is too 石板 (one dimensional is my best translation of what I mean here), she could have done better about showing her internal conflict as Susu is falling in love. The only scene that really made me feel like she did this was when she spoke to Jize. This is the only pivotal scene where I felt it's shown that she is wanted to choose TTJ and not just follow her mission till the end. Unfortunately it’s the only one and leaves me unsatisfied. Furthermore, this just makes her love of TTJ even harder believe fully. It pales in comparison to LYX's TTJ. Her ascension to godhood and all of a sudden 'I understand everything now' was rather lame and sidestepped the opportunity for them to actually talk about and unpack all the issues (aka stupid misunderstanding the writers used - lol the special effects didn't help at all either) and her love for TTJ (choosing to die with him doesn't count, as TTJ still saves her). I felt like in the book after TTJ's death, her journey to reconstitute(?)/assemble the pieces of TTJ is kind like a redemption for her actions before his death and a symbol of her love towards TTJ.
TTJ is honestly the character that the writer seem to have put more thought into for the drama. I did like the fox spirit and the general too. Their storyline was well done, unlike the other secondary couple. Luo Yunxi's character portrayal and progression in the series from the ‘mildly’ psychotic and selfish individual into a man willing to sacrifice it all for 'the world (that Susu loves and that he has learned to love from both her and his shifu)' is a great contrast. It is ultimately his choice to bear all the evils of the world that have been forced upon him as his destiny and take them with him into death, erasing the world's destruction. He deserved to be born into a better world. It's in this role that I see how LYX is so extremely talented. Also helps he just has such a 魅力 (not sure if I'm using the right characters but sometimes it's so hard to find proper words to translate what I mean) or charm about him. I like a pretty face like everyone else, but there's always got to be something more for me to become entranced and that's what LYX has done here to me.
ooh I haven't seen her in anything in awhile. Will definitely have to watch. Currently have Gone with the Rain…
Oh dear, I never could sympathise much with Scarlett. I found her to be such a brat. No wonder the titles are so similar. Thank you for writing reviews! I love reading them.
This is it! You've hit the nail on exactly what made me continue to feel like this show wasn't click all the boxes. The same problem I had is in Bai Lu's portrayal of her 'love' of Tantai Jin. Something about it was always off for me, especially towards the end. The only moment that I felt was her confession of 'I love Tantan Jin' was her conversation with Gongye Ji Wu. Her saying 'I no longer have room in my heart for you' was the most indirect and closest confession of her saying "Tantai Jin is in my heart" (most frustrating experience). Would it have killed the writers to give them a moment for her to properly say 'I love you' to TTJ and not when it's too late.
Yes exactly as you noticed! The world as we know it in the series is just not as 'worth' saving thus Susu's devotion to it and 'a greater good' is such a fallacy. It's makes TTj's sacrifice at the end unsatisfying and unjust. If it weren't for Luo Yunxi this would have been such a big flop. He brought TTJ to life in a way that made me laugh and cry alongside him. His characterisation of TTJ till the bitter end was truly all about his love for Susu, which just makes his choice to die so utterly selfless. Bai Lu, I felt, unfortunately didn't bring it enough. I just can't tell if the problem is with the script or her portrayal. I blame the script as well though. So much lost opportunities.

I will definitely be reading your review on it, if you post one. I am mildly interested in what happens but can't muster up the effort to watch it. It will be interested to see what you think about it. I always find your reviews to be well articulated and often expresses exactly how I feel about a show. Heck just 1 minute into Ancient Love Song has me more interested in what will happens then Gone with the Rain
In the meantime, An Ancient Love Song is a great watch while waiting for episodes -for those who don’t need…
ooh I haven't seen her in anything in awhile. Will definitely have to watch. Currently have Gone with the Rain on hold as I feel like it might not my cup of tea. Not sure if it's the fact that I don't like Moxi that much or what...
Just got done with ep 30 - I have not complained before but with only 5 episodes left, there’s just too much…
The lack of focus on the main couple is seriously starting to bite in these last few episodes as we get more of the second couple taking up airing time. 😒😤
Xia Zhi needs to stop hating on Meiren simply because she lost to her academically. Her inferiority complex is understandable due to her family's abuse and neglect, which certainly doesn't help her personality. But the way she acts as though Zhuang Yu is hers is baffling in this latest scene. Also thankfully it looks like Zhuang Yu doesn't seem to be too mad about finding out that Meiren started out trying to get his attention under false pretenses. I can't imagine how they are going to wrap up this drama in only 4 episodes that are left. It's honestly a major disappointment that we haven't get as much screen time for these two main leads. I enjoy the fluff and chemistry between them, but the cut scenes are beginning to show even more gaps in the plot. :(
Has anyone noticed that the episodes seem to have added scenes included now or scenes that have been re-edited? I just started a rewatch and noticed that there are scenes that weren't there or aren't in the same order as they where when this was airing. I am watching on a Chinese site so wondering if they came out with a special version like Goodbye my princess did.
