Tbh, I don't think it's that he's a coward. He said in court that XYL had to die for leaving his post, and even if she wanted to kill him, he would still say so. He said this to her face. So, it's not about that. I got this from watching the trailer.

Tbh, in the book I got the sense that XX's dad loved him but had pride issues/obsession with being the rightful ruler since he only didn't get to be king due to his legs. But in this show, it feels like his dad doesn't...care for him as much. An interesting change.

Tbh, I don't remember this happening in the book. There's been a lot of stuff that's occurred that wasn't in the novel. In the novel, she approached XYF first and made it seem like she was going along with everything he wanted/in his control. It wasn't until way later in the book that they had a confrontation, and this was because she wanted to stop being empress and leave the now fully grown baby king with a well-functioning kingdom, not under the threat of XYF.
