No, it was worse in the novel. Instead of crows, TTJ used blood wasps that basically become bigger and bigger as they kill and suck blood. It's very gruesome and terrifying to imagine.

Anyways, XL is a mortal with low cultivation. To wield heavenly artifacts, you actually need enough cultivation to activate it and if it is too powerful it can even backfire on you. It seemed like he was able to tap a little into the power of the HGS based on the color of the shield. TTJ gave the dropped HGS back to Bitchang and didn't attack her so the scale didn't need to defend her.
