Imo, this was how Seungdon intimidated and controlled Gangju since he was 15 years yo and he was trying to do it again. It has become a habit and Gangju did look downwards. The drama opened with Jiyeon scolding & yelling at the housekeeper (Bonghee's neighbour) and the latter's expression meant it was not the first time Jiyeon did it and she was so stressed out by her that she quit.

As a mother whose daughter would go blind without surgery, it is understandable to want to save her daughter's eyesight when Bonghee could not afford $800,000 and then, out of the blue, the money appeared before her.
Bonghee planned to take $800,000 but the grandparents reminded her that she has 2 other children. It was a situation where it was touch and go because Darim has very little time to save her eyesight.
I totally feel for Bonghee who had a very heavy burden of caring and supporting 3 children young children and parents-in-law for about 20 years. Other women might have abandoned the family or have died of stress.
