Years ago, a commenter and I were discussing drama characters. That you cannot put drama writers on the same level as novelists. Drama writers need to be conscious of the ratings and some writers even change the storyline midway due to ratings. They need to cater to the masses of all ages and all walks of life.
You cannot over-analyze drama characters. Otherwise, you will be unhappy and irritable. You need to overlook flaws in the storyline, characterization and plot holes for the drama to work and for you to enjoy the drama.
But if you find these flaws unacceptable yet you continue watching it, then your blood pressure will jack up. Then the drama with all its flaws is not for you.

SJ is also not to be held responsible if NY insisted on living her life in a self-centred, devious and malicious manner. We were shown how SJ was shot down by trash-spewing YJ when she tried to advise NY early in the drama.
The only person whom others can place the blame on is only YJ not even JS because he was burdened with supporting a family of 5. YJ failed to raise her own daughter well but kept putting wrong bad thoughts into NY's head about SJ since young.
The other person to be responsible is none other than NY herself. During that period of time when SJ lost her job and left home, she did feel slightly remorseful but told herself that SJ will always be able to overcome any problem. She did not help SJ in the least bit but left her to drown and SJ almost died.
NY knew she was wrong but chose to continue walking the wrong path. No one forced her, it was her own choice.
We cannot blame others for our own bad choices in life. We cannot blame others for NOT stopping us for walking the wrong path when we ourselves know, for a fact, that path is wrong. Others have their own problems to take care of.

In a flashback scene, just after YJ & NY have moved in with the Jins, little NY wanted little SJ's toy but SJ refused to give it to her. SY told her to give it to NY as she was older. So .... sigh!
