how do people find this uncomfortable to watch, it's so fun and light hearted
Exactly! Anyone who feels uncomfortable just because they see two guys together on screen (especially when it's not even BL) is kinda giving homophobic vibes for me. The show has such a funny and easygoing vibe and the guys' scenes aren't even trying to be "romantic".
For anyone confused:The main character (Kim ji Eun) turns into a man, but on the inside, she’s still the same…
I love the way you put it and the points you made here, I think cover the issue nicely and makes it easy for others to undertand plus the manhwa tags are literally gender benter and shoujo!
Ep1 it's soo much fun haha I think I will absolutely love this show~ >< Btw I remember reading the manhwa a long time ago but never completing it and if I remember correctly, the whole premise was that the curse was something that had to do with her family or smth like that? idk Honestly, this show feels to me like the purest form of love. The ML is truly a keeper for standing by her side and facing everything together. That kind of love unshaken by appearances or circumstances, is rare and beautiful. Something that can hardly be found irl lol Also, the ML’s interactions with the FL while she was stuck in the male body were hilarious af and kinda sweet! I am so excited! Kinda reminds me of Mr.Queen but the opposite situation haha
It also reminds me of another kdrama called The Beauty Inside (2018) which was a great series and again the FL had to switch appearances multiple times there and ML still stayed with her through it all^^
As far as dramatic scenes are concerned, it makes no difference, but I will never be in favor of censorship
Oh, neither am I. I truly believe everyone especially artists, authors, and creative people should have the freedom to express themselves. It’s really disheartening to see what happens to BL artists and production teams in China just for trying to share their work. It also makes it even harder for so many other promising series which are still sitting on the shelves to ever see the light of day. I just wanted to clarify that there's a difference between bromance and censored BL. As for the other part of my original comment, that comes down to personal preference, I tend to enjoy shows that focus more on subtle, romantic moments rather than relying heavily on bed scenes or overly intimate scenes. I appreciate stories that unfold slowly, with soft/longful touches, emotional dialogue, and a genuine build-up. That said, even without censorship, Chinese productions often understand the right balance especially when you look at how they handle romance in straight shows. So I believe I’d still be a big fan of their BL content. For instance, I love Revenged Love or Stay With Me. And ofc every now and then, I’m up for something a bit spicier too if the plot is compelling and the acting/chemistry holds up.^^
Honestly, I find the whole "bromance vs. BL" discourse that pops up under almost every censored Chinese BL each time they air, more amusing than annoying at this point...Like, come on. Is it really that hard for some people to understand? Look at the freaking poster and photos from their scenes in the gallery...Plus the director is the same one from WOH lol
Just because we don’t get kisses or bed scenes doesn’t mean there isn’t a deep connection leaning to romance between the leads. Personally, I often prefer some of these C-BLs over BLs from other countries that are full of physical intimacy yet fall short in acting and plot depth. I love to see the emotional buildup, the sweet and thoughtful dialogue with double meanings sometimes, the lingering glances, the subtle touches that can make your heart flutter.
So no, "censored BL" does not equal "bromance" in my book. Bromance is a close, friendly bond more like a found brotherhood with no romantic/sexual feelings attached. But in many of these C-dramas, the chemistry and emotional undercurrents clearly suggest something much deeper and romantic.
I couldn't resist anymore and finally started this! I’m 3 episodes in and it’s been so hilarious, literally had me laughing out loud. Episode 1 was a bit slow, just setting the groundwork, but episode 2 picked up and now episode 3 has me totally hooked! I knew I could count on Chai Ji Dan! The original adaptation and cast were nice too, but you can definitely see the upgrade in both the plot and cinematography/production this time around. Just like with Stay with Me! Can’t wait to catch up more!
I'm currently on ep2 and so far, it's just okay for me. One thing I’ve noticed however, is that this episode shifts the focus more toward the leads and their relationship, rather than the cases. That made it feel a bit slow and less engaging for me, since I usually prefer legal, medical, or crime dramas to keep romance as more of a subplot. But it might also have to do with the cinematography there are quite a few scenes just showing the leads together from a distance or cityscapes. While aesthetically nice, they tend to drag and make it easy for me to lose focus. I caught myself wanting to hit the fast-forward button a few times. With that being said, I love their lunch scenes together with everyone. It kind of reminded of Hospital playlist's friend group. That said, episode 1 did a pretty good job introducing the characters and cases, so I’m hoping episode 2 is just setting more groundwork for the bigger picture. It could honestly go either way from here, but for now, I’m still interested enough to keep watching.
Each case I watch ends up making me cry in the end...I don't want this drama to end, it just hits all the right spots!😭 Btw I am so glad I waited until it was completed to pick it back up from where I left!
Why even feel the need to "adjust," anything? Total B.S. How can China have that much POWER when it's not even…
Because the actors and production crew are still Chinese who leave in mainland...I mean they still need to be sure to have a way out for themselves, a future after the drama ends, cause If the drama causes trouble in mainland even without airing there and catches the gov's attention it will be them and their careers that get impacted! Look at addicted, stay with me, WOH, JITD etc. Personally i don't mind waiting an extra week as long as they don't cancel the show and find a way that works better for everyone, I am good.
Still on ep16 but this Cdrama is so heavy, so painful yet strangely relatable and comforting to watch. It's raw in a way that cuts deep but also feels healing, so that I can’t stop watching. Every scene feels like tearing off the bandage, only to later bandage the wounds again, over and over carefully. That’s the emotional pull it has over me, especially with QingYu’s and MuMu’s family dynamics, which hit a little too close to home. The words from the FL’s mother in the recent episodes really struck a chord. It was like seeing parts of my own mother come to life on screen her words, her silences, the weight of things left unsaid. I guess deep down, I’m hoping one day I’ll find my own Min Sheng or maybe first I can try to manage and overcome all that I’ve been holding onto like I am sure our main leads will be doing here.
I guess the comparison comes from both being medical thrillers involving serial killers? Plus both female leads…
I never said she was a serial killer though. And from what I've seen so far here, I haven't noticed the FL committing any actual crimes either. I just mentioned that both characters gave off some psychopathic vibes. A psychopath doesn't necessarily equal a killer. People with ASPD can be emotionally cold, manipulative or lack empathy but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re violent or killers. Also, as I said, I haven’t finished Hyper Knife so revealing the ending doesn’t really mean much to me rn. The early setup which I watched clearly wanted the audience to question her morality and intentions. So saying she gave off psychopathic vibes doesn’t feel off-base, even if she didn't actually kill anyone. Plus, inchoate crimes are still crimes. Planning or attempting something violent, even if it doesn’t succeed, still speaks about a person's mindset.
I guess the comparison comes from both being medical thrillers involving serial killers? Plus both female leads are portrayed as people having some psychopath traits but personally, I couldn’t really feel it in Hyper Knife, which is why I dropped it after the first 2 eps. With this one, I’m actually liking it better and prefer the story setting so far. We’ll see how it goes but first, I’ll have to wait for some decent subs before I can continue...
Who is in charge of these freakin subtitles? They cannot even distinguish what is present tense, past tense, etc.,…
I have a feeling the Korean streaming platform airing this show is either using machine translations or not providing English subs at all. They also handled Friendly Rivalry (and High Cookie) and I remember running into the same issue for the first few weeks until int platforms like Viki or Netflix picked it up. Personally for now, I’ve paused after episode 1, which I watched on a third-party site with machine subs. I’m planning to let it sit for a bit and wait for an international platform to pick it up since the show looks nice and it's a disservice to watch it with these bad subs. That said, I think it would still be a great idea to keep talking about the show online and help it go viral just like people did with FR. That kind of buzz might encourage int platforms to pick it up sooner! I really hope U+ Mobile TV would invest into English subtitles though...They need to make their platform more internationally friendly in order for them to grow bigger imo.
Episode 4 wrecked me, no joke. Watching Miji retreat into herself, isolating from everyone and hurting in silence for years...it hit way too close to home. I’ve been in that cocoon and honestly, part of me still is. But I’m trying to push myself out of it now because life doesn’t wait for anyone and new situations just keep coming, whether you're ready for them or not.
The moment she spoke to her grandmother completely shattered me: " I know I should get out of here, but I don't want to go back to being nothing again. I have all this life ahead of me and yet I feel completely lost."
And then her grandmother's reply felt like a warm hug through the screen: "If a deer runs away from a lion, does that make it trash? If a hermit crab hides in fear of being eaten, is it a coward? They’re all just trying to survive. You’re hiding to survive, too."
That line particularly "You're hiding to survive" lingered with me.
Also, major props to the actress. She has this rare ability to make emotionally heavy, depressing roles feel so raw and real. I remember finding her quite relatable in Daily Dose of Sunshine too. She just knows how to bring out that pain in a way that makes you feel it.
