So, we should listen to the critic and not watch for ourselves and decide. After all, it is the criticism job to enlighten us. What eiuld humanity do without them? I like the movie. I didn't appreciate the rape scene, other than that the movie was entertaining. Isn't that the point?

Chinese drama is rather monolithic. All currently streaming and under development dramas, whether custom or modern, revolve around the idea of empowering women (note zi am observing not complaining). The star of the drama is the FL. She is portrayed initially as young, immature, and easily bullied then she goes through a transformation, similar to thst of a butterfly, and becomes a strong, independent woman, loved and adored by the man of her choice while reaching all her goals. There are modifications to this, but the essential growth path is almost predetermined. There is much angst associated with her journey. She may be betrayed, she may betray. She will most likely suffer and perhaps make other suffer. Misunderstandings will abound, mainly to frustrate the watcher. But the ending is actually predictable. Though, to be fair, the endings for the 2025 dramas have tended to be anticlimactic. Perhaps, this is the future. My point is that the thematic vehicle may defer but not the theme. Modern and custom dramas have more similarities than not. Even after the plot is adjusted to accommodate the period environment. Ignore wuxia and xianxia, they don't affect the theme. only the plot. Which is fine, if the plots didn't vary somewhat, what would be the point in watching? Why I prefer custom? The ML lead spends much less time bullying FL and more time chasing her. Whether it is a horse-drawn carriage or a Maseratti is not important.

after Guardians' chicken-s**t ending I am not sure that I am ready for this movie. Perhaps a season two (the series WAS advertised on the title screen as Season 1) would salve my feelings of disappointment. It seems that crappy endings are the new normal for c-dramas.

This lady stole the show with her active. Her character was deceptively difficult to pull off and yet she did it. She made her character's behavior seem real and with a lot of depth. I hope producers and directors are paying attention. My respects to you, Ms. Zhang.

It was not a drama, it was a romantic comedy. It is supposed to be full of antics. Of course, if you watch these product in order to get off on the male lead, the thing to do is to watch it with the sound off. Blaming the female lead of mediocrity because she interferes with your ongoing romantic fantasies with the male lead is rather juvenile.

It is supposed to be a comedy. If you were expecting a literary masterpiece it would explain your attitude toward the presentation. I, for one, watched it with a smile on my lips when I wasn't laughing around. All these products are labeled "drama" (as in "cdrama") but sometimes that label is misleading. There is such thing as the "romantic comedy" genre, and this [drama] is a perfect example of it. It had depth, if you bothered to look for it, it had light romance, and most of all, it had enjoyable comedy. There is nothing wrong with absurdity in a romantic comedy, it is there on purpose.

I can't believe Ms. Zhang has only been tapped once as FL. Her acting in Agarwood was flawless and her beauty is addictive. I hope producers are paying attention and cast her as FL as often as it is possible. 我喜歡！

What really ticks me off is the fact that the senior brother gave her the poison w/o explaining what it would do. What’s worse, after the FL finds out what it did to him, she is still chummy with senior brother. Neither SB nor FL are very repentant about it.

Why the He got killed? Remember the guy that got beat up by Ling’er’s sevants at the beginning? His father, a powerful minister, had a feud with the He family. He became the regent on the emperor’s passing and caused the He family to be charged with treason by forging a letter. This feud dominates the entire drama. The underage emperor (her friend) recruited her to topple the regent. She is secretly a Left General (a ministerial rank).
