IMO TSJ didn't fail to protect XY in the hand incident. He has just stepped away when Princess returned to her own palace. It's CX's or his servant's fault for suggesting to her to go to the Princess' garden if XY's bored. CX already knew what the haughty princess would do to XY, but he failed to prevent her from getting abused by the princess.
Wishing for more such scenes, but we all know we must be thankful and contented with this rare gift from the director/screenwriter/s..
