if i remember correctly, it's a drug to make the drinker lose 30% energy, not lethal. The drug effect will wear off after a period of time... Ning is not the only one in cdrama/history for adopting such defensive tool.

In war/battle with enemy, it's either you kill or get killed. Zhou Jian is the attacker, out to kill them while Ning's camp is fighting for survival. If ZJ had left them alone, then his soldiers won't get killed
