... the thing is, the dragon's dismembered body parts are the core theme of the novel as they are looking for them (Yanhui is helping him to collect them or sth like that), and the novel's author is the scriptwriter of the drama so I don't think she would agree on altering the plot too much

I've only seen a few excerpts from the novel quoted on weibo and it sounded pretty idiotic and disgusting to me. Whether it's an immortal dragon (in a human shape) or not, I cannot understand how anybody could be fascinated by the text telling about body dismembering or body mutilation (that person shared it on weibo as a "good" stuff). But these were only some parts, maybe I just got a mistaken view of the entire thing.

I've also read an article about Yang Rong joining the cast, and the author simply called the novel "sadomasochistic"...(??)...:
