I am a classically educated European who, in late 2025, unexpectedly had a lot of free time on her hands during recovery from a major surgery. Bored to tears by standard Western fare, yet too physically weak to be able to focus on intellectually demanding content, I accidentally stumbled into my first C-drama on Netflix and have never looked back ever since.

Entering the world of C-drama was a huge cultural shock to begin with and, up to a point, it still is. But, for me, it is what makes the whole experience so interesting and so valuable: the endless interplay of cultural differences and our common humanity.

Up until recently, I have been watching exclusively historical dramas. The feudal patriarchal system being much the same all over the world, it has been easier for me to get my bearings in the past and start familiarizing myself with the vast Chinese culture. To my surprise, many of these historical dramas turned out to be, at their core, stereotypical romances. Normally, it is a genre that I avoid like a plague but, in its Chinese iteration, I unexpectedly came to enjoy it for several reasons, inter alia:

  • the stereotypes not being necessarily the same as in the West, I have been having great fun slowly getting a grasp on unfamiliar tropes;

  • the explicit content censorship forces Chinese creators to become masters of understated slow-burn romance, something only to be found in Western art-house productions;

  • ditto for the extraordinary aesthetic quality and visual sophistication of C-drama in general;

  • the so-called "idol dramas" debunk the unspoken premise that women must be beautiful in order to be attractive, whereas men's attractiveness stems from their more substantial qualities. In terms of physical beauty standards expected from the leads, idol dramas enforce strict gender equality, transgressively focusing on the female gaze: a guilty pleasure, but a pleasure nonetheless.

After recovering and realizing that my interest in C-drama was not just a fleeting fancy, I stopped blindly blundering about Netflix and became more demanding and more selective in my approach. I have also recently started expending my range and timidly venturing into different time-periods and genres.

This community has been very helpful in orienting me towards my next watch. Several reviewers, in particular, have earned my heartfelt thanks. Therefore, as of 2026, I hope to be able to contribute in turn.

In my reviews, I try not to discriminate between different genres but, rather, to judge the success of a drama based on what it sets out to achieve.

I do not enforce a rigorous rating system. In fact, if I feel that a drama is generally overestimated or undervalued, I might rate it dynamically, i.e. slightly lower or higher than I spontaneously would. Generally speaking, I rarely give very high or very low ratings. in that respect, I tend to display a typically European restraint. However, it should be understood that my standards are not loose. Anything with a score below 8 might be considered as watchable from a certain point of view, but is not something that I would personally recommend.
