I'm just here to appreciate this beauty of a novel. I'm quite late to the party, but binged read it within a week. Loved it from beginning to the end. Hope we don't need to wait so long for the drama adaptation.
If anyone has read the novel, is it worth reading?
It's worth it. The novel also went into details of Song Mo and Dou Zhao married life. So, that alone is worth the read if the drama left you want more.
I already lost count of how many times I've rewatched this drama. Each rewatch is still as enjoyable as the first time, with more discovery and understanding of those profound dialogues and life lessons. Still yet to find an equivalent drama. Truly a gem!
i'm a bit confused with the sudden downfall of wu family arc (part?) it feels rushed and wushan just storming…
Death of Song Mo's mother - Keep on watching
Fall of Wu family - It's basically Dou Shishu's scheme for court power struggle. Dou Shishu intentionally baited Wu Shan to show up for Dou Zhao for his plan to work. Remember he instructed someone to leak Dou Zhao's situation to Wu Shan. The rest is what you saw on screen.
anyone help recommend me som strong FL drama… my life no thing to do after this 🥹
The Story of Ming Lan * Are You the One * Blossoms in Adversity Destined * The Rise of Ning The Sword and the Brocade * Love Like the Galaxy
There are a lot more, but the above are a good mix of good story, romance, and strong/smart FL trope.
If you want to watch long married life of the leads just like in Blossom, check the ones marked with " * ". They more or less get married early or half way of the drama.
I swear, SM has been jealous of other guys with DZ since after the rain scene! He was blue with jealousy when…
SM in the novel is basically the same. Whenever Dou Zhao speaks to Ji Yong, he would fume with jealousy.
And he had an eternal feud with Ji Yong till the end of the story simply because Ji Yong in the novel had plans to propose marriage to Dou Zhao before. And, vice versa, the same applies to Ji Yong as well because Song Mo got to marry Dou Zhao and not him. Even the Crown Prince was at a loss for word when he learnt why these two, his right-hand men, cannot get along at all.🤣🤣
in the drama, it was still in Ming dynasty. Such handgun was more like a prized possession. After Ming lost to…
Thanks for the overview. Heavy usage of firearm warfare often break my immersion in costume drama as well. I want my dudes to be slashing swords with their flowy hair. 😂
It's ok to have different opinion.I loved both the novel and the drama, and noticed a couple seemingly weak points…
Dou Ming - I liked drama's Dou Ming a lot better. In the novel, she lives till the end and hate Dou Zhao for all the suffering she faces. Dou Zhao doesn't like Dou Ming either.
Song Han - In the drama, he was evil because he was ambitious. In the novel, he was pure evil. He fed poison to Madam Jiang knowing it's poison just because he does not want to lose his position as the second legitimate son. He killed his birth mother for the same reason as well, since Song Mo and Dou Zhao's investigation was getting closer. He was very cruel toward his wife and servants as well. Later, he even used his wife, Miao Ansu, to trap Song Mo into a relationship scandal. And also, helped aided Prince Qing in abducting Dou Zhao and her son to control Song Mo during the palace coup.
Chen Jia - The novel went into details about how Chen Jia became one of Song Mo and Dou Zhao's people. It was one of my favorite parts of the novel. Chen Jia was facing difficulties in his career as Wang Yuan was hunting him down (to silence him for Duke Ding's death incident). So, he intended to sought out Song Mo's protection. He was initially at a lost, but later found out the best way to reach Song Mo is through Dou Zhao as Dou Zhao has a lot of influence over Song Mo. He had a lot of respect and fear toward Dou Zhao as well, since he knew from their first meeting that Dou Zhao is not an ordinary woman. (Dude was literally drenching in cold sweat just by standing in front of Dou Zhao) Eventually, he became one of the trusted inner circle members, and later married to Jiang Yan (Song Mo's biological sister - yes, she didn't die in the novel). He played a major role in saving Jiang Yan. Jiang Yan's story was a whole another tragedy really. To sum up, Jiang Yan found solace in Chen Jia, and Chen Jia treasures her truly despite her past. Song Mo, as a loving brother as he is, was so reluctant to marry his sister off to Chen Jia initially. Only with the push of Dou Zhao that the marriage happened despite Song Mo's reluctance.
Ji Yong - In the novel, he even prepared to propose marriage to Dou Zhao. And doesn't have that good of a relationship with Song Mo till the end, as Song Mo got Dou Zhao. And, the 'remember the past' and 'design the whole clean the court plan' things were drama only plots. Ji Yong didn't have that much of a role and involvement in the novel in the second half of the story.
Dou Shishu - He was not evil in the second half of the story in the novel. He simply just didn't have that much role and involvement.

They were not, it's drama-only additions.
To one of your original questions, some of the characters that had major changes in the drama compared to the novel - Dou Ming - Song Han - Chen Jia - Miao Ansu - Ji Yong - Dou Shishu
Drama only chracters - Shu De - Su Yan
Those were the characters we saw on-screen. There were TONS of characters that were cut off, like several dozens at the least. Novel's cast is like 2-3 times that of the drama.
But, yeah, agree with the adaptation matter. Hence, lately I tend to read the source material of the drama I'm interested in.
Though, understandably, Jiang Yan's story will easily takes like 3-4 episodes minimum so they essentially cut her off in the drama.
I also finished A Familiar Stranger right after Blossom, and my gosh, it was excellent as well. This director really slaps from the get go.
The same applies to a couple other characters in the drama as well.

In the novel, FL is 1 year older than ML. So, we can assume the same for drama.

Best way deal with my withdrawal for now... 🥲😭
