Really sorry, its my bad coz i haven't watched TLB. So I dont have any word to judge how romantic the Chemistry between FL and ML is in that drama.
But I did watch the kiss scene in Upcoming Summer. As with other modern dramas/films, the kissing scene that is done in my opinion just natural if it tends towards a steamy kiss. While in the LLTG drama, to be honest, I saw their kiss scene more too politely. But this polite style of romance it turn out to produce such a strong chemistry impact. Even hypnotizing the majority of the audience to get lost in the romance of General Ling and Cheng Shaoshang. So in my opinion, it's not as simple as just the age factor of FL/ML.
And if we look more broadly, aren't there a lot of FL/ML who are the same age and are paired up in the dramas/movies? but not all couples get the equal enthusiastic response from the audience like in this LLTG drama.

As for Lusi, I think she's the type of girl as tough as Shaoshang. She seems prefer to care about thinking forward, open minded and keep being positive. Not even just this time, Lusi was 'shipped' with the co-starring actor. And I think mostly fans have been okay with that.
