Don't stress yourself mate ,some people refuse to think. It was a cleary open ending.
It's definitely a happy ending... albeit a last minute happy ending.
They were already hinting at his survival with his mom's prophetic dreams regarding a "special guest" and the reveal of his son's powers gave the explanation to how he survived
Regarding the time-related superpowers, my theory is that time can't actually be changed. Whatever happens will still happen. Even taking time-travel into account.
That's why we always saw BGJ's firefighter senior turn his head as if responding to something before running back into the burning building. He was reacting to the BGJ that learned to interact with the past.
So his mother's dream of burying an empty casket was always going to happen because he himself was lost in the past.
They mentioned how it's possible for powers to mutate or evolve but potentially with a price.
So my theory is that when BGJ managed to fully interact with the past it became harder to return to the present. Or the chaos just caused him to be unable to fully control his ability.
Ofc now with his son's powers being revealed we can say he was always meant to be stuck in the past to be saved by his son's ability to retrieve lost items from the past.
(Tho we can also say those items were lost due to his powers in the first place. Since he grabbed them from the past, during the period between retrieving it from the past and presenting in the present the item of course is "lost". Same goes for his father. Which is why he's in the same clothes as when he saved DDH.)
All in all, 100% happy ending! :)
The mother even dreamt of the "special guest" reunion!
I mean, "burying an empty casket" leaves a lot of room for interpretation...
It could be a scam concocted by DDH in order to make the dream come true. Once it's come true once, it can't come true again. A way to cheat the prophetic dreams.
Or they might've thought he was dead, but in reality he was just hidden somewhere recovering.
Theory is FL dies next episode, and he'll die saving her in the past...
But this drama has got to have a happy ending... so I'm expecting some miracle to happen and the the past will change so that they both survive... perhaps the whole family will lose their powers in the end...
Only one question: I thought the movie FL wrote was going to be a big production that the ML was going to star in. She even changed the script ending and handed it in before she quit.
How did it turn into a small production that she directed? Or did she direct a different movie?
I'm still confused as to whatever happened to the original Xiao Jing...
If you think about it, aren't these time-travelers erasing the original consciousnesses of the bodies and replacing it with their own? And then they drama-logic it away and somehow also bring their bodies back when they return to the future...

In ep 2 they fell to their rock bottom... when do they start rising up again?
When do they get married?

Very nonsensical...
