It really is the same. I basically read so much into the characters which is why my review might be a bit too…
He did grow up in a single household, his mother was a deacon who sent him to (the horror that is) conversion therapy when he was a teenager in his exploratory years.
I don't think he actually understands what love really is; certainly in his long term relationship with the bartender/nurse he did NOTHING to sustain the relationship let alone keep the spark alive. That said, he hadn't grown up seeing a healthy relationship and had nothing to reference. His friends were all the same as him, so, again, no reference.

This, to me, is queer content, written by, about and for the queer community.
It is reminiscent of the works of Russell T. David (Welsh drama writer).
