He did grow up in a single household, his mother was a deacon who sent him to (the horror that is) conversion therapy when he was a teenager in his exploratory years.
I don't think he actually understands what love really is; certainly in his long term relationship with the bartender/nurse he did NOTHING to sustain the relationship let alone keep the spark alive. That said, he hadn't grown up seeing a healthy relationship and had nothing to reference. His friends were all the same as him, so, again, no reference.
I don't know if it was the conversation, the music, or what.
It's a great short though.

It is reminiscent of the works of Russell T. David (Welsh drama writer).
