Zijing knew about the “lost shipment” of pearls. In fact, my bet is it wasn’t even in transit. The sample pearls the merchant showed everyone are hepu south sea pearls and not pearls from his region (as pointed out by Duanwu). So it was Zijing that gave him the pearls. It was a set up!
