I finished watching this drama! Thankfully I didn't drop it, although it took time.
Acting, chemistry and visual are amazing. It is much better than Legend of the Female General. It has more depth.
Now my opinions: 1. Deng Kai and Lin Muran broke the screen with their acting! 2. I hate Kong Xueer's hairstyle here. She looks like the brothel owner 😓 3. It would've been better if Qi Min's story focuses on the revenge part instead of making him an obsessive demon. 4. Fan Changyu's lackeys has more screentime than Li Huai'an and Sui Yuanqing! I know they serve as loyal friends as well as comedy, but it's too much. 5. Except Xie Wu, the other Xie guards are insignificant. 6. The scenes I love the most: Changyu and Grand Tutor Tao 😁 the theatrical scene of fake Marquis Wu An, and the scene where Song Yan was dumbfounded seeing Changyu is the General Huaihua and his superior was beating him left and right 😂 7. The actresses playing Consort Qi and Xie Zheng's mom are soooo pretty 😍 8. Tian Xiwei looks so different with and without bangs! I can't get used to it. 8. I like the "alternate story".

It is somewhat similar to Tigers Sniff the Rose (Meng Ziyi, Li Yunrui) novel. FL is a princess, arrogant, cold, loner. ML is a poor scholar who aims to work for the people welfare.
The novel is very short and I highly recommend it!

Some people who don't know the meaning will criticize the title. But fyi, "tigers sniff the rose" is originally based on Siegfried Sassoon's poet which describes "a powerful individual who also possesses a delicate side". The poet is translated to Chinese as "there is a fierce tiger in my heart carefully sniffing a rose" which symbolizes having both power and gentleness within one's nature. This title actually portrays both FL and ML perfectly.

I won't spoil anything about the plot twists in TPG's novel. There are too many. The novel is very good. I suggest you to read it. However you will be utterly disappointed with the drama once you read the novel.

The FL, Jiang Taohua is lovely, coquettish, flirtatious, pretentious and incredibly cunning, brave and always stays positive even in tough situations. She always outsmarted the ML, Shen Zaiye. Jiang Taohua is so similar with Hua Liuli (Royal Rumours) where Meng Ziyi is also the FL. That's why I was excited bcos I could imagine her doing all those coquettish antics.
But the scripwriters decided to create a new FL! Her coquettish and flirtatious side only appeared for 4-5 eps 😡
Then we have the ML, Shen Zaiye. A cunning, manipulative, cold, famous for being wicked and corrupt minister, but in fact he eliminates the corrupt officials. He has plans to build one united nation under a wise ruler and he won't abandon his dreams for anything. But once Taohua entered his life, he becomes more humane, shows emotions, and he is greedy for her love and attention, though he refuses to admit it. He gets sulky when she ignores him, furious when she leaves him. He adjusted his plans for her, but his methods are different from her.
They whitewashed Shen Zaiye’s deep character into a "family man on a revenge mission" plot.
The plot twists in the novel also didn't happen in the drama.
I still feel devastated until now. They really wasted the actors and good novel. I can only imagine the scenes in the novel played by the actors 😭
I'm really really sorry if I offend He Lei's fans. This is my first time seeing him so I have no hatred or whatever. I just have problems with him being cast as Shen Qiu.
Shen Qiu is described as handsome, dashing, heroic, youthful, passionate, a bit intimidating, implicitly the number 2 desirable bachelor after XJX. But He Lei is nowhere near that.

I believe her maids in the past were exactly the same with the current one before they experienced hardships. Capable and useful doesn’t mean they were smart. It was their desperation and loyalty to save SM that made them become useful.
