I agree with you on GJ portrayal of SMY. I can't speak for his other roles but in this particular role as SMY GJ is doing well. He improved significantly since Legend of Anle. His line delivery is way better than his past work eg Legend of Anle, Rising Against the Wind. He's not perfect but to say he hasn't improved is ludicrous. He's doing a lot less of the pouting of the lips when he talks and using less of his chin to talk...do you know what I'm talking about?
In the first three episodes of the anime (because I dropped it after three couldn't finish it), SMY fights with a non-expressive face. And unless he has an emotional intense scene, GJ has a non expressive face.
That is not an actor flaw; it is a character trait.
