I still think he is a douche. He is very possessive of her and I think that side of him makes him dangerous. I think she is wary of his high handedness. Also love is natural not forced and it you force it it will come even slower.

I do not think she loves any of them including the father. I feel like they are a means to an end. The eldest son had a flaw thus she dismisses him. The second is a tool and even he is aware of that. Hence the constant attempts to quietly undermind her.
