It is hard to know for real though. He is working for Netflix, appearing in a Netflix programm, and it is showed…
I mean, true, but it's not like he's forced to mention this, especially, because this Commentary was made with Netflix Korea. Anyway, what he said is true in this case, because he only said the translation of the poems is great, not the whole sub, because I don't think he watched the whole show with ENG SUBS.
I'm not fluent in Korean, but the poems were well-made, for sure! The subs overall were decent, I didn't find anything bad, like I usually do most of the time. Even if you don't speak the original languages, it's easy to spot if the translator made a big mistake or even little ones.
I'm not talking about the last scene, but I'm pretty sure the whole 2nd part of the 2nd season was about the first guy and Yumi getting closer to each other again.
It's not an action or thriller, what did you expect from a real life slice of life drama? Also, I'm sorry, but…
The whole show is significant to me, because it tells an important story about 3 generation of family. It's obvious you don't like real life drama with mature stories, so yeah, there's no point watching it if you only like cute romcoms where the couples only getting together in the finale.๐
Calling it boring is just lazy, like I said, it's not a real opinion. So many things happened in the first 5 episodes, saying it's boring is just being ignorant.
Like I said, ratings on MDL and in general doesn't mean anything, because most people give 10 or 1 anyway. Most people don't know how to rate. I gave 5/10 to Lovely Runner, that means it's average, basically. So, it's not hate as you can see it.
You don't have to write a whole book about any drama, but saying it's boring is just lazy and not a real opinion, like I said.
Anyway, I don't want to change your mind, you won't watch the whole show anyway, so there's no point talking about this. You clearly started watching it for the romance, even tho this has one of the best written romance I've seen in 20 years! And it has multiple couples, btw. This is the first Korean show I gave a 10/10 in 20 years, I have 15 Asian drama including movies I gave 9/10, everything else is lower, so you can see I'm not biased.
I love IU, she's my fave, and many people love her other show "Moon Lovers", but I just hate how they ruined it.
It's not an action or thriller, what did you expect from a real life slice of life drama? Also, I'm sorry, but…
Because it's not a real opinion, it's no different from saying: "It's crap." You only watched 5 episodes, and I won't spoil it, but this isn't just about romance, this is about FAMILY, and trust me, the romance is anything but boring. It has a LOT of fun moments as well and the couples doesn't have the usual happy ending, like I said, this is a real life drama with real life problems, if you just watch 1 more episode you'd realize, btw. Not every drama has to be entertaining in a way like a comedy, or a cute meaningless romcom, this drama is meant to teach you an important lesson about life and family, not to mention women empowerment. I don't even remember when was the last time I saw so many strong and well-written female characters.
I don't care about the rating on MDL, 99% of the drama is overrated here, because people don't want to give lower scores than 7/10. They say: "Oh it wasn't good, yet they still give an 8/10 score.
Lovely Runners started out great, but it's obvious the writer made the rules along the way, and she doesn't know how to write a time traveling story. There were more plot holes in the story than characters on the show. It's not the worst show of all-time, and I'm not a hater either, but time traveling stories are one of my faves, and I don't watch Kdrama because of cute boys and girls or the romance. If something is about time travel and has its own rules, the minimum I expect is to stick to it, but the writer kept changing the rules in almost every episode. Not to mention the absolutely ridiculous finale where she changed the whole past, so people can forget her, but yet her grandma still remembers, and later everyone will, because why not? They can remember a past that never even happened. Makes sense, right? No it doesn't.
It's not even close to "Twinkling Watermelon" that is also a time traveling show.
You can read my longer review and see what's the problem with that show.
See? This is a real opinion, not what you said: "boring".
I feel afraid to say it because thereโs so many videos of people crying to this drama, but it was incredibly…
It's not an action or thriller, what did you expect from a real life slice of life drama? Also, I'm sorry, but I can't take anyone seriously who give 10/10 to Lovely Runner, one of the worst written Kdrama ever, and call one of the best written Kdrama boring.
Don't get me wrong, you don't have to like it, but saying it's boring is just ridiculous.
The writing is bad to say the least, and the 2nd guy was irritating as hell. That's all I care about, not the romance. Not to mention, she basically slept with the guy the minute she broke with the other, they ended the 2nd season like she's gonna end up with the 1st guy, but now she's gonna have a 3rd one. Ridiculous. But the worst part is that her imaginary friends or whatever we should call those are not interesting anymore. It was fun in the 1st season, but in the 2nd season it was boring.
LOL! If you watched only half the season, why did you flag it as "Completed"? Weirdest comment I've seen on MDL…
If you didn't watch the whole show why did you flag it as completed when you didn't? Makes no sense. Also, if you liked the last half of it, I don't get why did you ignore the first part? Because your fave actor is not in it? Also makes no sense, you're missing out. If you cancel a show because you don't like it, I get that, but starting from the middle is just weird.
My netflix account is on hold so I'm still on episode 4. Does it really get that good? The rating is....
Yes, this drama actually worth the hype. My first ever 10/10 drama and I watch Asian movies and show for 20 years. Nothing can hold the candle for the writing, not to mention acting.
To be honest, I started watching this drama just for Kim Seon-ho, from episode 9 to 16. But then I ended up loving…
LOL! If you watched only half the season, why did you flag it as "Completed"? Weirdest comment I've seen on MDL so far. I can't understand how people can ignore episodes and say they understand everything when you missed 50% of the story.
This is my first ever Kdrama I rate 10/10, even tho I don't feel it's perfect in every possible way, but this is what it deserves! I'm too tired to write a long review now, but I will tomorrow, or after I rewatched the whole series again.
Because there's no point writing a 3 line long subtitle like VIKI does it. It's nonsense! You don't need to translate…
This is your VIKI, and still is, btw. Maybe next time if you wanna talk about them and how nice they are, read their Forum and what the actual FREE translators think about them, because VIKI don't pay them anything, just give them a subscription, and that's not even 1% of what official translators like me earn! VIKI sub is like 10 usd or so, Official translators get that for 10 lines or so!
You can find a LOT of threads like these with translators and viewers complaining about the quality of their subs and so on.
Seriously i know some korean and the netflix subtitles are sub par to say the least. Its frustrating to watch
Still better than VIKI subs. And as I said, on Netflix usually you can find two English sub, a normal and a CC version, and that's the better song, because the other one is script for the dub.
Because there's no point writing a 3 line long subtitle like VIKI does it. It's nonsense! You don't need to translate…
"How can pausing ONE scene cause a viewer to NOT recall where they are in the story "and not for the story"?"
That's not what I said. Ruining the flow means, you have to pause the episode multiple times, because there are a LOT of long lines. If the lines are shorter, you don't have to, and you can watch the episode normally. This isn't about remembering a scene. But if there's an important scene, and you have to pause 5 times in 2 minutes, the impact is not the same if you don't pause.
"Viki translators are known for being the best translators for ANY OTT"
I'm sorry, but where did you get this info? I watched a LOT of shows on VIKI, and it's not better in any way than subs on Disney or Netflix. Sometimes it's much worse, because they do literal translation, and 99% of the time, that's not the proper way. Not to mention the sentence structure. It's not always right on VIKI.
"other OTTs don't provide the rich nuanced experience that Viki is known for."
VIKI is mostly used by Kdrama fans. Can you name those nuances? I'm curious, because it's clear you're biased.
"The only thing I've gotten from your bashing is that if you had your way every drama or movie that required translation would strictly be in standard English, and in your case, Hungarian, rather a homogenized translation."
Again, WRONG! I'm not bashing anyone, I'm just saying, it's irritating to read a 3 line long sub on VIKI, when what the character is saying is only 1 line. Also, if you don't know anything about the Hungarian language, please stop talking. It's one of the hardest language and the most creative one as well. English is the easiest and the most simple one.
BTW, I can't even count how many times I watched a Kdrama on VIKI where characters speak informally, but the translator wrote in formally, and the in the next like they did it informally again. It was a mess! The older shows are especially bad.
"WHY there are so many languages and not one standard language across our planet?"
This has nothing to do with good or bad translations.
Like I said, I'm learning language normally, and I speak multiple languages, so I can clearly see if a subtitle is wrong, and I do this job for more than a decade!
Anyway, there's no point arguing, because you're clearly biased and probably one of the translator on VIKI or their co-worker.
I've had so many encounter with Anime and Kdrama fans over the years saying, they prefer subs even it's not perfect, but they appreciate the work. Well, I'm not like that. I'm a perfectionist, and I can't tolerate bad subtitles, not even average ones.
Because there's no point writing a 3 line long subtitle like VIKI does it. It's nonsense! You don't need to translate…
If you need to pause scenes it ruins the flow of the show, and you're basically watching it to learn the language, and not for the story. I'm not watching movies and shows to learn the language, I care about the story. The subs on VIKI are not only too long, but not the best either. There's no reason to use the honorifics or other stuff, and as I said, you don't need to translate every word to keep the meaning of the sentence. Longer sentences are not necessary more nuanced. A great translator can do this job properly, even if they don't write a whole book about a 1 line long sentence.
On VIKI, a lot of time they have 3 lines and even a translator note. It's irritating and totally unnecessary. If someone is good in this job, they don't have to write a book and notes. Shorter lines doesn't mean you're gonna lose the real meaning.
I know fans like to use honorifics, because I did translate a lot of Japanese anime and shows back in the day, but you're not only translating for fans, you do it for many people whom are not familiar with Kdramas, and they will stop watching it if they see a subtitle that is half of the screen, basically. Also, there's a LOT of mistranslated sub on VIKI.
I'm not fluent in Korean, but the poems were well-made, for sure! The subs overall were decent, I didn't find anything bad, like I usually do most of the time. Even if you don't speak the original languages, it's easy to spot if the translator made a big mistake or even little ones.
Side note: The directors himself said, the ENG SUB on Netflix is really good, especially the poems!
