Okay, good - I was a little confused as a French-Irish American. I was like...um, that is how we used to greet my great-grandmother on a quotidian basis and it never felt like a subservient thing, I actually loved doing it. It was a way to communicate my affection. Makes more sense now that I know it has some ties to Catholicism (both Gallic and Hibernian culture are steeped in Catholicism).
