I am just one episode behind you on 11 but so far this is what I can tell:

Qi Min is the son of Crown prince Chengde who died alongside Xie zheng father 16 years ago. His mother then burnt down the east palce and exchanged him with prince Changxin's eldest son because she feared for his life.
The current emperor came to power because Wei Yan put him on the throne after both the previous emperor and crown prince passed away because he had no strong maternal family and was therefore easily controlled.
