Boring plot, empty characters and barely any action
Alchemy of souls season 1 exceeded my expectations so my excitement was at peak for season 2. I couldn’t wait to see naksu back in her original body. Since the bar was set soo high i thought writers will take everything to the next level, more plot twists, more action, more magic and more alchemy of souls. But season 2 was nothing more than a story of marriage of convenience couple going back and forth with their feelings. Yes!! This season was made to bring naksu and Uk together thru the overused “Fate” and “amnesia”plot. The main lead couple was going to end up together eventually but the story could’ve been soo much better than this . Writers incorporated rapunzel’s story in the show 😭 . I am not even joking as FL had amnesia and she was trapped in a room by her mother and awaited a prince. And then Jang uk walks in as expected. They tried to bring in the same chemistry that yul and crown prince had with mudok but failed. I won’t say that the main lead couple had zero chemistry, they definitely had chemistry but what he had with mudok was magical. The new FL could’ve had her own identity but she was forced to live under naksu’s shadow.
All characters lost their perspective roles, Park Jin become a comic character and had no role left in the story. Yul was left to suffer again with his one sided feelings and guilt. Dang gu,cho yeon and crown prince also had no part to play in the plot. There were all empty characters with no specific role.
I forced myself to finish season 2 just to find out if Yul will live or not. Otherwise I had lost all interest in episode 1.

Every masterpiece has a copy !! QOT feels likes a copy!
I was eagerly waiting for this drama and somehow managed to avoid every single spoiler. With Queen of Tears breaking records left and right, the hype only kept growing, and naturally, so did my expectations.Overall, it's a decent one-time watch, but I definitely won't be sitting through all 16 episodes again. The first half was enjoyable enough, but the second half completely spiraled into chaos and not the entertaining kind. Calling it average would be generous;2nd half of it was genuinely frustrating to watch.
I didn't hate the drama, but some plot points seriously tested my patience. The FL getting amnesia and the ML ending up in jail exactly at the time she went into surgery felt absurd and painfully cliché. And then the male lead getting hit by car and then being shot at ! Like wtf is this an action thriller !!
The final episodes were where things really fell apart for me. They felt like a copy-paste version of Crash Landing on You. The only difference was that Hyun-woo took the bullet for Hae-in, whereas in CLOY, Se-ri took the bullet for Jeong-hyeok. Even the scene of Hyun-woo wandering through the snow in the middle of nowhere searching for Hae-in gave me major déjà vu. The similarities became so distracting that I couldn't stop noticing them. Also just bcz some things worked in one drama doesn’t mean they will work in all dramas. By the last episode, it was so obvious that I ended up skipping through most of it.
And the reason I keep calling it a copy isn't just because of some similarities to Crash Landing on You or legend of the blue sea .It felt like the writer took bits and pieces from several of their own previous dramas and stitched them together to create the last six episodes. If you've watched the writer's earlier works, you'll probably understand exactly what I'm talking about. Instead of feeling like a fresh story, it felt like a collection of familiar tropes and scenes recycled from past successes.
What disappointed me most was that such a talented cast couldn't compensate for the weak and often incomplete storyline. It felt as if the writer ran out of fresh ideas and relied heavily on familiar formulas rather than developing the story in a meaningful way. And finally, there was just way too much crying. At some point, every episode felt like an emotional marathon, and instead of making me emotional, it simply became annoying.

Unnecessary dragged
The first episode had me hooked but as the show progressed the story became just like any other Kdrama. Don’t know why some scenes and characters reminded me of true beauty. The character tae sung had uncanny resemblance with true beauty’s seo jun. Anyhow i wish there was more depth to the characters as female lead seemed shallow and same with some other characters. The female lead got on my last nerves with her stupid choices. The more chances she gets to go into the past the more dumb and careless she behaves and gets herself in trouble. I do feel bad for sunjae.I still continued to watch it but Episode 8 is when it all went down. I was okay with the cliches too but episode 8 completely ruined it for me. Time travel become a joke at this point. Even sunjae’s feelings become a joke based on how conveniently Sol expressed her feelings 14 years later and he didn’t ask for an explanation? Like his feelings literally become so irrelevant after this point because no matter what sol does he kept clinging to her like a puppy. I hated to watch her travel back into past again. I wish they had ended the drama at episode 8 where they confessed feelings and got together. THE END but noo the writers had to drag the story even if they have nothing new to add to develop the plot.
I can easily guess what the final episodes are going to be about soo not curious at all.
Ps I know it’s seems stupid to drop a drama soo close to the finale but it cringe so bad when things get lame. I gave this drama a fair shot but…

Do I need to say anything at all !! 100/10
What’s not to like about this show! Everything including the story, the characters, the dialogues is 10/10 .I like to see characters having deep meaningful conversations, it’s important to understand what made them connect with each other (atleast for me) and the story unfolds every detail. Nothing was left unaddressed or incomplete. My heart was full at the end of the show.
Captain Ri and Yoon seri set such a high bar with their chemistry. I was rooting for them from the start. The 2nd lead couple had good chemistry too and their story was adorable even thou they couldn’t end up together.
It’s one of those rare shows where the story, the cast and the execution was all in right place. It had the right balance of comedy, drama, suspense and romance. I have already rewatched it 3 times and can’t seem to get bored if it.

Too slow
The story had potential but the pacing was too slow. I dragged myself to watch the show but after a certain point i couldn’t take it anymore. The plot is too plain and boring most of the time. Mostly a show captures attention in the beginning episodes but I kept waiting till 3rd and 4th episode to find a reason to continue watching it. I heard all praises for this drama and hence thought to watch. The story is inspiring but a good story alone won’t convince the audience to watch a drama.k Although it does deliver some important messages of self love and all but still I just couldn’t connect with the show that much.I loved seon gyeom‘s character. He was sweet and the way he reflected on himself was inspiring. The 2nd lead couple’s chemistry was better than the main lead.

The rise of jung Uk and fall of Naksu
I don’t usually write reviews for every K-drama I watch, but Alchemy of Souls absolutely deserves one. The moment I finished it, I had an itch to get my thoughts out and here we are.Alchemy of Souls is an ambitious blend of fantasy, action, romance, and historical elements. When it comes to historical fantasy K-dramas, very few come close to matching its scale, world-building, and production quality.
The story is undeniably captivating, but I wouldn’t call it completely original. It relies on several familiar tropes. For example, the deadly assassin seeking revenge who eventually falls in love with someone connected to her enemy is hardly a new concept. Naksu starts as a fierce, highly skilled assassin driven by a clear purpose. However, after losing her powers and becoming dependent on Jang Uk to regain them, she gradually loses sight of her own goal. Ironically, while she keeps pushing the male lead toward his destiny, she abandons her own. That was disappointing because Naksu began as such a formidable and compelling character. By the end, she felt incomplete—a woman who lost her purpose before achieving it.
Then there’s Jang Uk. Born under the King’s Star and destined to become the world’s savior, he is established from the beginning as someone “special.” His troubled past and identity crisis make him an easy character to sympathize with, but they also become convenient excuses for almost everything that happens to him. It works for a while, but when a character becomes too powerful and too destined for greatness, their journey starts feeling predictable. What’s more frustrating is that Naksu is often the one rescuing him, yet her role is largely reduced to supporting his growth.
That said, despite their individual flaws, Jang Uk and Naksu work beautifully as a couple. Their chemistry is one of the drama’s strongest points. The slow-burn romance feels natural and convincing, and I especially enjoyed their master-and-pupil dynamic. Still, I never expected that dynamic to define their relationship until the very end, nor did I expect that we would never truly get the assassin Naksu back.
The love square involving Mu-deok and three different men was... a lot. The Crown Prince developing feelings for a servant pushed things a bit too far for me. However, Seo Yul’s history with Naksu was genuinely touching. His quiet devotion and silent protection made some of the drama’s most emotional moments. In fact, I found myself constantly wondering why he never confronted Naksu about her true identity when he clearly knew who she was. Why stay silent all that time? And while we’re at it, why was she still carrying Yul’s whistle around? The drama never really gave a closure on them.
My biggest disappointment remains Naksu herself. For a fantasy-action series, I expected far more from her character as an assassin.
As for the other characters; Master Lee ended up having a more significant impact on the plot than Yul did, which felt like a missed opportunity.
On the other hand, the Crown Prince was an unexpected delight. I never thought he would become one of my favorite characters, but his charisma, humor, and character growth won me over.
The soundtrack was another highlight. The music complemented the drama beautifully, and “Just Watching You” easily became my favorite track.

Simple and cute
I started watching this drama with zero expectations hence i was able to enjoy it , it slowly grows on you. It’s a cuteeeeee romcom and that’s all there is to this drama. Nothing more. The story is quite plain and plot is simple. For a drama with North and South Korea relationship as backdrop, you may expect more to the plot but there is no tension or many ups and downs in the story. So if you want to watch a light short romance with no chaos and no villains then this drama is for you. Because the focus is only on the main couple. I watched 4 episodes in one go and i am lil sad that it’s only 8 episode drama.
The main lead couple have good chemistry. They have enemy to lovers relationship. I enjoyed their constant bickering. Their first encounter was hilarious. They slowly grow on you and you crave more of their moments together. The male lead is soooooo cutee…For once a celebrity character who actually behaves like a celebrity and not like a common person. Although there isn’t much to his role but i enjoyed his cute arrogant nature. FL is neither too sweet nor too harsh. She reminds me of Dan from crash landing on you. There aren’t many other notable characters so that’s that. But not a bad watch for a 8 episode drama.
